20 AARP 2012 YEAR IN REVIEW
NEW ORLEANS
VOLUNTEER PROJECT
Imagine spending the first day of
your vacation in service to others.
That’s what 1,500 AARP members
did in September, when they fanned
out across New Orleans to make life
better for others. This “New Orleans
Reimagined” experience kicked off
Life@50+ | AARP’s National Event
& Expo. By connecting with others
who needed help, these volunteers
brought to life the motto of AARP:
“To serve, not to be served.” Similar
opportunities for service will be
replicated in 2013 when Life@50+
travels to Las Vegas (May 31–June 1)
and Atlanta (Oct. 45).
EMPLOYEES GIVE BACK
AARP employees dug deep to make
life better for others throughout the
year. Many took advantage of the
Associations “Community Builders
program by taking paid time away
from work to volunteer for nonprofit
organizations. Staff members also
donated more than $1.1 million
through the annual AARP Employee
Giving Campaign. AARP added
a 50 percent match, bringing the
total to more than $1.7 million
dollars donated to 1,400 nonprofit
organizations nationwide.
AARP members left a lasting legacy in
