The prosperity of the middle class has been the basis for the American
way of life for decades. Yet that prosperity has been threatened in recent
years by loss of jobs, falling home values, rising health costs and reduced
savings. Three of every four Americans nearing retirement age in 2010
averaged less than $53,000 in income and $27,000 in retirement accounts.
By arming millions of people 50+ with information, AARP helped foster
constructive debates about how to restore the American dream.
YOU’VE EARNED A SAY
From March through December, 6.5
million AARP members shared their
views through You’ve Earned a Say.
They completed questionnaires,
recorded video messages, attended
public events and joined telephone
town halls. To foster more inclusive
dialogue, a number of events were
presented in Spanish; all materials
were available in English and Spanish,
and often in Chinese and Korean.
