Aggressive research and development are essential for survival in a world where the
rapid pace of development can make products obsolete before they ever make it to the
market. At Samsung, we invested US$1.38 billion in R&D during 1998, a 31.2 percent
increase over 1997, representing over 8.3 percent of total sales.
