Public interest in cancer has been heightened as a result of the Japanese government’s
national cancer awareness and prevention programs that began in 2007. Aflac regularly partners
with Japan’s local governments to promote various initiatives and events that benefit cancer
awareness. One such Aflac-co-sponsored event was a concert held in November 2012 in Chofu,
Japan, a suburb of Tokyo where Aflac has a large operations center. The theme of this concert
was inspiring dreams and creating a future for kids battling cancer. Performers included several
well-known singers, a jazz group, and some young local musicians – all using their musical talents
to appeal for support including fund raising for those fighting against pediatric cancer.

ADMINISTRATIVE EFFICIENCY IMPROVES PRODUCTIVITY, SERVICE AND VALUE
Technology has long been the driver of one of Aflac Japan’s significant competitive strengths – administrative
efficiency. At Aflac Japan, the number of policies in force per administrative employee is much larger than that of
every other life insurance company operating in Japan. This efficiency allows us to give consumers quality products
at affordable prices while compensating our sales force with competitive commissions. At the same time, we are also
enhancing the total value we deliver to customers by making efforts to ensure we pay claims accurately and promptly.
LOOKING TO THE PROMISE OF THE FUTURE
Although we are the market leader of cancer and medical insurance in Japan, we will not rest on our laurels. Every
day is a new day in which we will continually work to improve our operations to allow us to deliver our promise more
effectively than ever. As Japanese consumers continue to face a strained financial system, rising medical expenses,
an aging population, and a declining birthrate, we anticipate that the national health care system will bear additional
financial pressure. We believe Japanese citizens will continue to seek out solutions to protect and manage their
physical and financial health.
We believe Aflac is well-positioned in Japan’s insurance market. As we model our product and distribution initiatives
for the future, we believe the competitive strengths that have driven Aflac Japan’s success in 2012 will continue to
benefit Aflac Japan in the future. This success will further opportunities to deliver our promise to more policyholders.
