Ricoh Group Sustainability Report 2014 62
Collection and recycling
Having promoted recycling-oriented businesses since the 1990s, our product recovery network is
highly efcient today. We have rened our entire logistics process and reduced our environmental
impactbycontinuouslyreningourarterialandvenouslogisticows.
Product collection (reverse logistics)
Ourlogisticssystemintegratesbotharterialows
that deliver products to our customers and venous
owsthatcollectusedproducts.
In the reverse logistics of our collection process,
information stored in a product’s bar code is read
into a product recycling database that compiles the
number and ratio of recovered products and parts.
This data is then used to develop plans for the sale
of recycled products or reuse of parts.

Designing
The Ricoh Groups design and development is integrated with our supply chain to fulll increasingly
diverse customer needs while raising development efciency and lowering product costs. We have
innovated our entire design process from procurement to recovery and recycling.
Platform- & Module-type Development
Our Platform- & Module-type Development System
usesmoduleswithexiblespecicationsinthe
creation of new products.
 Byminimizingtheneedfornewmodulesto
upgrade product specications, the system leads to
improved quality while making design work more
efcient. It also lets Ricoh channel resources to
create highly advanced new technology and to plan
several generations in advance for the inclusion of
recycled components in new models.
ΣE System reduces total parts by
more than 90%
The ΣESystem,developedfrom1996to2006,
makes the selection of electronic parts more
efcient, lowers procurement costs and shrinks
inventories. It has helped us cut the number of
discrete parts used in Ricoh products from 35,000
tojust 3,000. Parts that are registered in the
ΣESystemdatabasehavetheirQCDE(quality,cost,
delivery, ecology) certied by a group of specialists
and are cleared for use by Ricoh engineers. The
system accelerates parts selection in the upstream
phase of the design process, ensures quality and
reduces procurement costs and inventories.
