Dear Fellow Shareholder:
Wireless communications and broadband Internet services are two of the more
transformative technologies of our time. There are approximately 230 million wireless
and more than 100 million broadband subscribers in the United States alone – domestic
revenues in these two sectors exceed $180 billion annually.
The rapid growth and adoption of these services illustrate a powerful and undeniable fact:
customers want both a true broadband experience and mobility when it comes to their
communications services.
Until now, they have had to settle for one or the other. Clearwire is striving to change that.
We are building one of the fastest and most capable wireless networks ever conceived.
The innovation behind this network puts it in a league of its own and will enable a cost
structure that radically changes the economics associated with the delivery of data,
voice and video.
We are building one of the fastest and most
capable wireless networks ever conceived.
Our fi rst mobile WiMAX network, being built in Portland, Oregon, has demonstrated
that it can consistently deliver 5 to 6 megabits per second downlink and 2 to 3 megabits
per second uplink, all while moving at 60 miles per hour down the highway. Combine this
with a seamless and consistent user experience, both home and away, on any device or
screen, and you have a network that stands to change the game forever.
Just as mobile phones now connect to people rather than places, Clearwire is giving our
customers the ability to access the Internet, at true broadband speeds, when they are on
the go. This combination of high speed and mobility – the power of the mobile Internet
– will enrich people’s lives, and the world we share, beyond measure.
In 2008, we expect to launch all of our new domestic markets using standards-based
IEEE 802.16(e) mobile WiMAX technology. We will soft launch Clearwire’s fi rst mobile
WiMAX market – Portland, Oregon – in the middle of this year, with three additional
markets – Atlanta, Las Vegas and Grand Rapids, Michigan – coming on line before year
end, representing an additional six million people covered by our networks.
