Ourbusinessenvironmentanditscorrespondingoperating
resultsaresignificantlyaffectedbythelevelofenergyindustry
spendingfortheexplorationandproduction(“E&P”)ofoil
andnaturalgasreserves.Anindicatorforthisspendingisthe
rigcountbecausewhendrillingandworkoverrigsareactive,
manyoftheproductsandservicesprovidedbytheoilfieldser-
vicesindustryarerequired.Ourproductsandservicesareused
duringthedrillingandworkoverphases,duringthecomple-
tionoftheoilandnaturalgaswellsandduringactualproduc-
tionofthehydrocarbons.ThisE&Pspendingbyoilandnatural
gascompaniesis,inturn,influencedstronglybyexpectations
aboutthesupplyanddemandforoilandnaturalgasproducts
andbycurrentandexpectedpricesforbothoilandnatural
gas.Rigcounts,therefore,generallyreflecttherelative
strengthandstabilityofenergyprices.
RigCounts
Wehavebeenprovidingrigcountstothepublicsince
1944.Wegatherallrelevantdatathroughourfieldservice
personnel,whoobtainthenecessarydatafromroutinevisits
tothevariousrigs,customers,contractorsorotheroutside
sources.Thisdataisthencompiledanddistributedtovarious
wireservicesandtradeassociationsandispublishedonour
website.RigcountsarecompiledweeklyfortheU.S.andCan-
adaandmonthlyforallinternationalandU.S.workoverrigs.
Publishedinternationalrigcountsdonotincluderigsdrillingin
certainlocations,suchasRussiaandonshoreChina,because
thisinformationisextremelydifficulttoobtain.
NorthAmericanrigsarecountedasactiveif,onthedaythe
countistaken,thewellbeingdrilledhasbeenstarted,drilling
hasnotbeencompletedandthewellisanticipatedtobeof
sufficientdepthtobeapotentialconsumerofourdrillbits.
Inmostinternationalareas,rigsarecountedasactiveifdrilling
operationshavetakenplaceforatleast15daysduringthe
month.Therigcountdoesnotincluderigsthatareintransit
fromonelocationtoanother,areriggingup,arebeingusedin
non-drillingactivities,includingproductiontesting,completion
andworkover,orarenotsignificantconsumersofdrillbits.In
someactiveinternationalareaswherebetterdataisavailable,
aweeklyordailyaverageofactiverigsistaken.

agesforeachoftheperiodsindicated.

TheU.S.–landandinlandwatersrigcountincreased
18.5%in2004comparedwith2003duetotheincreasein
drillingfornaturalgas.TheU.S.–offshorerigcountdecreased
10.2%in2004comparedwith2003primarilyrelatedtoa
reducedlevelofspendingbymajordiversifiedoilandnatural
gascompanieswhohavecontinuedtoredirectaportionof
theirspendingtowardslargerinternationalprojects.TheCana-
dianrigcountdecreased1.9%,primarilyasaresultofunusu-
allywetweatherinthesummerandfallof2004.
OutsideNorthAmerica,therigcountincreased8.6%in
2004comparedwith2003.TherigcountinLatinAmerica
increased18.9%in2004comparedwith2003,drivenprimar-
ilybyspendingincreasesinMexico,VenezuelaandArgentina.
TheNorthSearigcountdecreased15.2%in2004compared
with2003primarilydrivenbycontinueddeclinesindrilling
activityinboththeU.K.andNorwegiansectors.Increasesin
spendingintheNorthSeabyindependentoilandnatural
gascompanieswerenotlargeenoughtooffsetdecreasesin
spendingbymajordiversifiedoilandnaturalgascompanies,
whichcontinuetoredirectspendingtowardsotherlarger
internationalprojects,especiallyinRussiaandtheCaspian
region.TherigcountinAfricadeclined9.3%in2004com-
paredwith2003primarilyduetoprojectdelaysinWestAfrica.
ActivityintheMiddleEastcontinuedtorisesteadily,witha
9.0%increaseintherigcountin2004comparedwith2003.
TherigcountintheAsiaPacificregionwasup11.3%in2004
comparedwith2003primarilyduetoactivityincreasesin
India,Indonesia,AustraliaandoffshoreChina.
