BakerOilTools’revenuesincreased
16.4%in2004.Duringtheyear,thedivi-
sionsuccessfullyinstalledthefirstinte-
gratedmultilateral,intelligentwelland
sandcontrolcompletionsysteminNorway,
anditsethorizontalgravelpackrecords
inadeepwaterwellintheU.K.InEgypt,
BakerOilToolsprovidedhighpressure/high
temperaturecompletionsystemsinadeep-
waterfield,andranitsfirstexpandable
linerextensiontoisolateagaszone.The
divisionalsointroducednewtechniquesto
sidetrackwellstorenewtheirproductivity.
Theseinnovationsincludedthrough-tubing
casingexitsystemsforexoticalloysand
underbalancedoperations,andthePath-
MakerTMmilltodrillthroughcasingand
intotheformation,whichBakerOilTools
co-developedwithHughesChristensen.
BakerAltashadanexceptionalyearin
2004,buildinguponpriorsuccessbyintro-
ducingnewtechnologiesandexpanding
intonewmarkets.ThenewMagnetic
ResonanceExplorerSMserviceusesnext-
generationNMRtechnologytoevaluate
rockformationsandthefluidstheycon-
tain.TheEARTHImagerSMserviceacquires
highresolutionboreholeimagesinoil-
basedmudtohelpclientsunderstandthe
stratigraphiclayersalongthewell.Thenew
PredatorXPSMperforatingsystemimproves
productivitybypenetratingdeeplyintothe
formation.AndthenewWellLinkSM
LivewireserviceusestheInternettodeliver
wellboredatatoclientssotheycanmake
betterdecisions,faster.BakerAtlasalso
begannewserviceoperationsinEquatorial
Guinea,India,KazakhstanandRussiadur-
ingtheyear.

Ihavebeenimpressedwiththe
company’scommitmenttobuildinga
HighPerformanceCulture,particularlyits
dedicationtointegrityandcompliance.
BakerHughesremainscommittedtothe
highestethicalstandardsinallthatwedo,
andwewillcontinuetoabidebyapplica-
blelawsandregulationsinalljurisdictions
inwhichwedobusiness.
Overthepastyear,wehavedevoted
significantresourcestoreviewourbusiness
practicesandproceduresaspartofour
certificationundertheSarbanes-OxleyAct
of2002.Webelievethattransparencyis
anessentialelementinanysuccessfulcor-
porategovernanceprogram,andwehave
madeitintegraltoours.
FinancialFlexibility
Duringtheyear,BakerHughescontin-
uedtostrengthenitsbalancesheet.We
retired$350millionindebtthatmatured
inthesecondquarter.Asaresult,thecom-
panyhasreduceddebtbyover$1.7billion
frompeaklevelsin2000.Ourtotaldebt-
to-capitalizationrationowstandsat23%,
providingthecompanysignificantfinancial
flexibilitytopursueitsstrategicinitiatives
andtoleverageopportunitiesthatmay
ariseinourindustry.
