Satellite is our middle name… and XM’s satellites also project the
Power of X. XM’s 15-kilowatt satellite “Rock” – which lifted off in
a perfect launch March 18 – and “Roll,” scheduled to follow in
May, are not only the most powerful satellites in the
entertainment industry, but the highest-power communications
satellites ever constructed.
Built by the industry’s leading manufacturer, Boeing Satellite Systems
International, Inc., “Rock’s” and “Roll’s” transmissions will be powered by the
world’s largest commercial payloads, delivered last year by Alcatel Space,
Europe’s leading satellite exporter. Alcatel’s payloads feature numerous
innovations that will allow the satellites to transmit power of more than 8
megawatts per channel, a first in the satellite industry. Each satellite signal
covers the entire continental U.S.
But all that power would be useless without the digital technology in the
receiver, thanks to cutting-edge custom chipset technology being developed by
global semiconductor manufacturer STMicroelectronics. The chipsets, based
on two custom integrated circuits, provide the groundwork for the development
and introduction in 2001 of mass-production XM radios that also include the AM
& FM bands.
To develop and deliver the chipsets, XM engineers and STMicroelectronics led
an unparalleled global cooperative integration effort with some of the leading
names in chipset design, including Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute, Certicom
and Digital Voice Systems, among others.
