We’re counting down to the moment at which XM Satellite Radio
will launch commercially – representing the birth of satellite radio
service in the U.S.
Bringing the dream of satellite radio to reality has required
reaching a number of technological milestones, pulling together a
compelling product and crafting a carefully laid-out plan.
Thanks to the extraordinary efforts and passion of the XM team,
XM is executing its business plan and achieving its ambitious
milestone goals. In fact, the last year has seen unparalleled
achievement in laying the groundwork for the imminent launch of XM.
And as the Power of X inexorably builds, it’s becoming clearer each
day what the X-Factors are behind the coming new wave of radio:
• Technology to the Power of X: Last year saw the
completion of our two satellites, the highest-power
communications satellites ever built by the industry’s leading
manufacturer, Boeing Satellite Systems International, Inc. More
importantly, on March 18, 2001, we successfully launched our
first XM satellite called “Rock” and plan to launch “Roll” in May.
XM will be everywhere our listeners are – thanks to these two
high-powered satellites and a comprehensive repeater network.
We also shipped our cutting-edge production chipset to XM radio
manufacturers – A huge technical milestone. This is the final
chipset, manufactured by STMicroelectronics, the result of a
global integration effort among XM engineers, ST and our other
international technology partners. These chips are now being
incorporated into XM radios for delivery to retailers and
automakers this summer.
• Radios to the Power of X: Our service will be available in
GM and other new cars and trucks with the introduction this
summer of award-winning XM Ready radios for the car and home,
developed by the world’s leading radio manufacturers, including
Sony, Alpine, Pioneer and Delphi Delco, among others. Six
manufacturers have unveiled 24 different models of XM Ready
radios that include the AM & FM bands. In fact, Pioneer and
Alpine XM Ready radios are being sold at retail today, requiring
only an XM tuner module and antenna, available this summer.
• Experience to the Power of X: XM listeners will enjoy near-
perfect sound generated by next-generation digital signal
processing technology… originating from the XM Broadcast
Center, one of the largest, all-digital radio broadcast facilities in
the world. And the innovative, consumer-friendly features of XM’s
new satellite radio service won XM the coveted “Best of CES”
award in the automotive category at the 2001 Consumer
Electronics Show.
• Music to the Power of X: Listeners will enjoy the XM sound
created by our outstanding programming team comprised of the
brightest radio stars in nearly every genre of music, from reggae

“At a time when
music is relatively
stagnant, XM will be a
breath of fresh air by
opening up America’s
ears to an incredible
array of sounds.
Sounds that people
need to hear... Jazz
music from the
streets of Chicago to
new rhythms from
Cuba... it’ll all be
there, on XM.”

launches on March 18, 2001.
