NEWS SPORTS
The ultimate key to success is programming. XM will offer the
superlative programming – up to 100 channels of popular or unique music,
news, sports, talk and other audio entertainment and information – all for just
$9.95 a month.
Radio Icons
Industry icons like Lee Abrams and Jonathan Schwartz, leading innovators
in radio over the last generation, are shaping and producing our unique
content mix. And we signed an agreement with Qradio, the Internet radio
outlet of multiple Grammy award-winning producer Quincy Jones, to create
our World Music channel, for which Mr. Jones will provide overall guidance
and creative direction.
XM Original Sound
We will also create XM Originals – dozens of channels – many commercial
free and each with its own unique image and personality – featuring an
unsurpassed range of formats. Our goal is to create XM fans, not just
listeners. Our hot new talent and cool original programming will reenergize
the passion of radio – offering wider entertainment choice and availability
than anything that exists on radio today.
Today, over 70% of commercial radio stations broadcast one of only five
formats, providing limited consumer choice. XM Originals will create
popular as well as exciting new innovative formats. Imagine a separate Oldies
station for each of the last four decades and channels highlighting concert
tours by today’s hottest artists. XM Originals will also offer entire channels
devoted to Jazz, Blues, Reggae, American Standards, New Age and Classical
performers. These formats are considered too narrow for most local radio
markets – despite their share of over 20%, or $2.9 billion, of music sales.
XM Originals will also scout for and air underexposed artists – just as cable
expanded opportunities beyond broadcast television for emerging talent.
In addition to our XM Originals, we will offer a host of nationally branded
channels featuring content from media leaders: NASCAR, BBC World Service,
USA TODAY, BET, Radio One, One-On-One Sports, the CNN News Group,
Bloomberg, Hispanic Broadcast Corporation, PBS’s NewsHour with Jim
Lehrer, C-SPAN, Salem Communications and many more.
Unsurpassed Studios
Detroit may have Motown but D.C. has XM. We will produce XM Originals at
the largest digital radio broadcast center in the world, at our Washington,
D.C. headquarters. Located in a region that is home to leading Internet,
media and telecommunications companies, we are building over 80 state-of-
the-art acoustically isolated transmission and recording studios. XM’s
headquarters and studio facilities will be completed by July 2000.
