When we began our business in 1984 with one small
pawn shop in Irving, Texas, it wasn’t easy to make the pawn
industry look good. This oft-misperceived world, with its
movie images of dimly lit, smoke-filled storefronts and
corruption, lacked both focus and clarity of perception. Over
the next 25 years, Cash America succeeded in revolutionizing
the pawn industry with everything from store concepts and
layouts to a comprehensive database for assigning collateral
value – all results of homing in on customer need and
enhancing industry standards.
Of course, the concept of pawn loans isn’t new – pawn
lenders have been around, say some historians, for more
than 3,000 years. But the idea of a brightly lit, customer-
focused store staffed with friendly customer service
representatives who deliver consistent, knowledgeable
collateral assessments was something of a novelty when we
began. This is the focus that propelled Cash America to the
top of our industry.
As the first publicly owned national pawn chain, we’ve
developed a high-end, customer-focused business. We’re
proud to say that our traditional pawn business – now
more than 675 stores strong – remains a reasonable
alternative to traditional financial institutions for
millions of hardworking American families.
We’ve come a long way in expanding our
industry’s operations and updating public
