Esther Cantrell
is sharp, self-
motivated and
strong. Her accom-
plishments include
being a prize-winning
poet, a writer, a singer,
an off-Broadway
performer and…a jet
mechanic! Five years
into her Navy career,
Esther is an Aviation
Machinist’s Mate near
her home in Virginia
Beach, VA. She also
serves as an instructor,
assists in the mentor
program and provides
musical accompaniment
for military ceremonies,
family gatherings and
even a major league
baseball game.
Growing up in a
family of eight children
in Brooklyn, NY, Esther
said she was prepared
for boot camp but had
no experience in deal-
ing with finances.
“Joining something
called Navy Federal,”
she said, “made sense
since I was in the
Navy.” Now she calls
Navy Federal her
backup plan, because
she can call anytime
and talk to a person
who understands
Sailors and their situa-
tions—even getting
short-term loans to
help with the expenses
of her large family.
“I’ve never had a jam
I couldn’t get dealt
with by using Navy
Federal,” she said. “I’ve
always been taken care
of. I just signed up for
Web Bill Pay, and that
should help me keep
up with the bills every
month when I’m away
from home.”
Looking forward in
her career, Esther’s goal
is to earn a college
degree and achieve the
rank of Master Chief.
She wants to make a
difference so young
people will look to her
and say, “I want to
do that.”
