In 2015 Unlever reached the landmark of
havng all tea n ts Lpton teabags sourced
from Ranforest Allance certfed estates
after an eght-year nvestment programme
THE SEURITY OF OUR SUPPLY HAS
INREASED WHILE LIVELIHOODS
HAVE BEEN ENHANED
In March 2015, we announced that all palm
ol bought for our European and Australan
food busnesses s traceable to certfed
plantatons, a crucal mlestone towards
our am of elmnatng deforestaton
ong beyond that, our new palm ol
processng plant n Se Mangke,
Indonesa, underwent testng n 2015 and
started operatons n January 2016 It
represents a US$130 mllon nvestment
and wll source palm ol from known and
certfed sources for our global use
In addton, we are workng wth the lmate
Polcy Insttute and IDH n Indonesa to
create a long-term landscape management
plan to help smallholders sustanably
mprove ther yelds and lvelhoods
At the same tme, almost all our paper and
board across our supply chan came from
certfed sustanably managed forests or
from recycled materal by the end of 2015

as we strve to reach our sustanable
sourcng targets and mprove the
lvelhoods of those n our supply chan
and surroundng communtes Workng n
global partnershps, we have dentfed a
number of crops and countres that requre
targeted, ntegrated acton to mprove
sustanable agrcultural practces, lnk
smallholders to our markets, address food
nutrton gaps, mprove busness sklls and
provde fnance
In support of ths approach, we formed
a number of new partnershps In 2015,
Unlever, Acumen and the lnton ustra
Enterprse Partnershp (EP) launched
the Enhanced Lvelhoods Investment
Intatve to mprove the lvelhoods of as
many as 300,000 smallholder communtes
across Afrca, South Asa, Latn Amerca
and the arbbean It s a three-year
US$10 mllon nvestment plan to spur
economc growth by backng prvate
enterprses whch lnk smallholders to
Unlever’s global supply chan and
dstrbuton networks
In 2015, Unlever and the lobal Allance
for Improved Nutrton (AIN) created
a Nutrton Interventon Program whch
ams to mprove the health and nutrton of
25 mllon rural people Its am s to reach
smallholder farmers, from helpng them
to dversfy ther dets to provdng better
nformaton on nutrton
Addressng hunger s also about reducng
food waste A thrd of food calores
produced are never eaten To combat ths,
Unlever helped shape the onsumer
oods Forum pledge, workng alongsde
the World Resources Insttute, to halve food
waste by 2025 wthn member company
operatons, and reduce food waste among
consumers and through the supply chan
To help acheve ths, we have a new
partnershp wth the lobal Foodbank
Network allowng us to redrect food
that s stll ft to be consumed Also,
Unlever s supportng the ‘hampons
123’ coalton that seeks to tackle food
loss and waste Our EO, Paul Polman,
s a champon along wth other busness
leaders and representatves from cvl
socety and government
