WE NEED TRANSFORMATIONAL
HANE FOR THE OOD OF
SOIETY AND BUSINESS
2015 proved to be a pvotal year, wth
groundbreakng global agreements reached
on both clmate change and development
To realse the ambton ‘zero carbon, zero
poverty’ wll requre the prvate sector,
government and cvl socety to go beyond
‘busness as usual’, workng n partnershp
to acheve change at scale
In September 2015, the Unted Natons
adopted 17 Sustanable Development oals
(SDs) – a roadmap to 2030 that wll requre
concerted acton and partnershp between
governments, cvl socety and busness
Unlever has been an early leader on the
SDs through both the UN Hgh-level Panel
and our engagement wth the UN lobal
ompact LEAD group of sustanablty
leaders We also partnered wth lobal
tzen and Proect Everyone, campagnng
organsatons focused on motvatng young
people about sustanablty, to rase publc
awareness about the SDs As the world
looks towards the mplementaton of the
SDs, we are supportng the recently
establshed lobal ommsson on Busness
and Sustanable Development whch seeks
to work wth busness leaders across
sectors to broaden support for market-
based solutons
World leaders met n Pars n December
2015 for the UN Framework onventon
on lmate hange’s 21st onference of
the Partes (OP21) The result was a
hstorc agreement supported by an
unprecedented movement of prvate sector
acton The new legal agreement to tackle
clmate change s supported by plans from
every country to reduce emssons and a
range of commtments from companes,
nvestors, ctes and regons
Unlever worked wth the World Busness
ouncl for Sustanable Development
(WBSD), World Economc Forum (WEF),
UN lobal ompact and We Mean Busness
oalton to encourage companes to step
up ther efforts to address clmate change
n ther own operatons Speakng n Pars
at an event hosted by the UN Secretary
eneral and Presdent Hollande of France,
our EO Paul Polman urged busness
leaders to contnue to delver postve
momentum Unlever led by example and
announced ambtous targets to be carbon
postve n ts own operatons by 2030
The consequences of ths agreement go
far beyond the actons of governments
alone The mpact wll be felt n banks,
stock exchanges, boardrooms and
research centres as the world absorbs the
fact that a unque proect to decarbonse
the global economy has begun
Prevously, n 2014 we dentfed four areas
for acton where we want to see sector-
wde transformaton elmnatng
deforestaton sustanable agrculture and
mprovng lvelhoods access to clean
drnkng water, santaton and hygene
and women’s empowerment Essental to
delverng change n these areas are the
Unlever Sustanable Lvng Plan (USLP),
whch sts at the heart of our busness
model, our Sustanable Lvng brands that
brng the USLP to lfe, and global coaltons
and partnershps that take t to scale
ELIMINATIN DEFORESTATION
As part of our commtment on clmate
change, Unlever s workng to help end
deforestaton, whch accounts for up to
15% of global greenhouse gas emssons
We have made good progress on our
sustanable sourcng and deforestaton
agendas by workng n collaboraton wth
an ncreasng number of growers, traders,
manufacturers and retalers who have all
pledged to rd ther supply chans of
deforestaton
THE NEW PLANT ENERATES
400 JOBS DIRETLY AND
MANY MORE INDIRETLY
The Se Mangke palm ol processng
plant n Indonesa, opened n 2015, s
creatng a more traceable and certfed
supply chan for our palm ol dervatves
