outdoor And fitness
In 2010, the outdoor and fitness segment became
the largest contributor of operating income. As
the product engineers continue to think outside the
walls, the team is developing applications and feature
sets desired by consumers who are focused on
personal fitness and family adventures.
Following its entry into the golf GPS market the
previous year, Garmin delivered two additions,
including the Approach® G3, a slightly smaller
version of the G5 predecessor. Approach G3 offers
more than15,000 preloaded U.S. golf courses,
touch-targeting and course preview. Or, customers
can access these features on the wrist with the
Approach S1 part sport watch, part touchscreen
golf GPS with shot measurer and preloaded courses.
Improvements to the Astro® GPS Dog Tracking System
brought the DC 40 tracking collar to hunters. The
DC 40 integrates the GPS receiver into the collar’s
main housing, allowing owners to combine it with
most standard e-collar receivers.
In June, the introduction of the GPSMAP® 62 series
gave hikers, hunters and geocachers a way to follow
their passion while putting new applications in their
hands. The 62 series is compatible with Garmin’s
subscription-based BirdsEye Satellite Imagery as
well as Garmin’s free Custom Maps utility, which
allows customers to transfer paper or digital maps
onto their handheld. Customers can also upload
their activities to the free Garmin Connect site to
store, share and analyze. The GPSMAP 62 series
supports paperless geocaching so users can
quickly download cache information directly
to their device.
As geocaching continued to gain popularity
with families, outdoor enthusiasts and
Scout troops, Garmin looked for ways to
enhance the experience. One solution
was chirp, a unique wireless
beacon that communicates with
compatible Garmin handhelds
like the GPSMAP 62, Oregon®
and Dakota® series. chirp
stores hints, transmits
multicache coordinates,
counts visitors and
confirms the cache is
nearby. In December,
Garmin announced
the creation of
OpenCaching.com, a completely free online
community for creating, sharing and finding
geocaches around the world. OpenCaching.com
makes it free and easy to download every detail of
every cache, introducing more people to the activity
and enabling Garmin to interact directly with these
customers.
