2009-10 was a year of transition for the video
game industry and for Ubisoft. After many years
of steady growth and a 20% peak in 2008, the
whole market decreased 10% this year, primarily
as a result of the global financial downturn and
the increase in piracy. This sharp decline had a
direct impact on our sales and financial results.
Nevertheless, Ubisoft teams delivered some winning
products and reinforced the foundations for future
growth. Assassin’s Creed II, praised by gamers
and media alike, ranked among the top three
best-selling holiday titles and has sold nine million
units to-date. On the casual segment, Just Dance
encountered phenomenal success, winning over
gamers on Wii and skyrocketing to the top of
industry sales charts for several weeks. We also
made our first moves in online with the launch of
UPlay, Ubisoft’s online gaming and customer service
platform. Finally, the success of our short movies
based on the Assassin’s Creed franchise or our
figurines modeled after the Rabbids proved we are
capable of extending our brands to new media.
The investments made over the course of the last
few years are going to enable us to win over new
market share on segments where we are already
well positioned, such as high-end and casual
games, as well as reinforce our position in the
online segment, which continues to register
strong growth.
On the high-end market, we’ve decided to
focus our attention on creating blockbusters.
Our ambition is to repeat the success we have had
with Assassin’s Creed II and extend this winning
model to other brands. To meet this objective, we
will be concentrating our resources on our
strongest brands. This new organization is going
to enable us to boost our studios’ profit margins.
The results should be visible this year with the
release of several blockbusters including Assassin’s
Creed Brotherhood, Driver San Francisco, Shaun
White Skateboarding and Ghost Recon Future
Soldier, which are destined to become must-have
titles in 2010-11.
