you for your support during a very challenging year. Like the rest of the
world,Garminwasaffectedbytheslowdownintheglobaleconomyin
2009.Manycompaniesthatweren’tpreparedfortherecessionsuffered
greatly—someevengoingoutofbusiness.Otherschoseto“hunker
down”anddonothinguntilthestormpassed.
Asisourcustom,Garminchoseadifferentroute—innovatingthrough
adversity.Weredoubledoureffortstoensurethatourcompanycontinues
toleadthewayinexcitingandusefulconsumerelectronics.Whetherthrough
thedevelopmentsofeye-catchingformfactors,stunninglyelegantuser
interfaces, or industry-leading features, functions and technologies,
Garmincamethrough2009withaneyeonthefuture.
In 2009, we increased our market share and improved our margins
despiteeffortsbysomeotherstocompeteoncostalone.Wesucceeded
becausewhilepriceisanimportantfactor,it’scertainlynottheonlyone.
Consumersalsolookforabrandtheycantrustaswellasfeatures,functions
andservice—allcomponentsthatGarminprovides.
Butweweren’tcontenttostopthere.Throughastrategicalliancewith
ASUSTek,webroughtthenüvifone™ M20 and G60 to market in 2009.
These two handsets were designed as the rst-ever navigation-centric
smartphones,andwhilewewishthesedevicescouldhavebeenbrought
to the market sooner, we continue to believe that consumers want
robust, dependable and easy-to-use navigation integrated with the
poweroftheinternetandvoicecalling.Welookforwardtointroducing
newhandsetsin2010togrowthispartofourbusiness.
Furthermore,wearedeepeningourrelationshipswithautomakers,and
2009 saw Garmin navigation technology in Hyundai, Suzuki, Chrysler,
Ford,BMW, MINI and Citroen. We are condentthatweareuniquely
positionedtoexperiencethedevelopmentofmoreOEMrelationshipsin
the future.
Whileourautomotive/mobilemarketisourmostvisiblesegment,we
continuetoinnovateinothermarketsaswell.Intheoutdoorrecreation
and tness market, we introduced the Approach™, a golf GPS with a
brillianttouchscreen and thousands of preloaded courses. Wedebuted
anarrayoftnesswatches,designedforeveryonefromthemostcasual
ofrunners to elite triathletes. And we integratedadigitalcamerainto
our touchscreen Oregon®handheld,givinghikersawaytophotograph
a scenic vista and automatically mark its location for future reference.
Whiletheeconomyhasnodoubtaffectedouraviationandmarinebusi-
nesses,wecontinuetoinvestinnewproductinitiatives.Forboaters,we
broughtlarge,high-performancetouchscreendisplayscoupledwithexcep-
tionalfeaturestotheGarminMarineNetwork,winningsomekeyOEM
accountsalongtheway.Inaviation,weannouncedthelandmarkG3000
integratedtouchscreencockpit,andwereceivedFAAcerticationforour
G500retrotavionicssuite.WearecondentGarminiswellpositioned
to benefit as these markets recover.
Alongtheway,Garmin’sworldwideIPportfoliogrewtoover400patents
and250trademarkregistrations—atruetestamenttoourinnovation
andonethat’sbeenrecognizedacrosstheindustry.
Behindall these accomplishments are nearly8,500talentedassociates
worldwidewhocallGarmin home. I am condent that 2010 will be a
