When Garmin brought its rst product to market, the GPS 100,
pilots saw a glimpse of how GPS technology would change the
aviationindustry.Now,20yearslater,aviationcontinuestobeone
ofGarmin’scoresegments.PilotsaroundtheworldturntoGarmin
for comprehensive navigation and communication systems that add
safety and situational awareness to each ight. In 2009, Garmin
continuedtoexpanditsaviationmarketpresencebyintroducingand
certifyingproductsthatserveawiderangeoftheaviationindustry,
from the entry-level experimental and light sport aircraft (LSA)
segmenttothemorecomplexPart23businessjets.
Garmin’sG1000™ continues to be one of the most popular general
aviationsuite.Today,sixyearsafteritsmarketintroduction,theG1000
isavailableonmorethan25aircraftmodels,approximately7,000
G1000’sareyingandtheyhaveaccumulatednearly2millionhours
of ight time. This growth continued in 2009 when Piper Aircraft
announced the availability of the G1000 in the Piper Meridian, and
EmbraerbegandeliveringthePhenom100andPhenom300business
jetswithGarmin’sall-glassProdigyightdeck.InadditiontoOEMs
choosingtheG1000asfactory-installedavionics,theretrotmarket
hasexpanded andGarminreceived certicationforG1000 retrot
installation in the King Air 200 and B200, and the company has
begunaretrotprogramfortheCessnaCitationJet.
Alsoin2009,Garminannouncedanall-glasscockpitspecicallyfor
the experimental and LSA market segment. Because experimental
andLSAcustomersoftenbuildtheirownaircraft,theG3Xisanall-glass
avionics suite that uses a building block design so that pilots can
tailortheavionicstotheiraircraft.TheG3Xhasfeaturessimilarto
thosefoundontheG1000.AspecialversionoftheG3X,theG300,
wasselectedfortheCessna162SkyCatcher.
InJulyatEAAAirVentureinOshkosh,Wisconsin,Garminannounced
theG500,anaffordablypriced,retrotavionicssuiteforsingleand
twinengineaircraft.Atthesametime,Garminannouncedtheavailability
ofsyntheticvisiontechnology(SVT™)totheG600andtheGAD43,
anautopilotinterfacefortheG500andG600thatreplacescostly-to-
maintainattitudedirectionindicator(ADI)gyrosindicators.
AlsoinJuly,Garmincelebratedthedeliveryofthe100,000thGNS™
400/500seriesproduct.Garmindonatedthe100,000thunit,aGNS
530W,totheEAAYoungEagles,anonprotorganizationdesigned
to get young people interested and involved in aviation.
Theaera™500,510,550and560lledademandforanintuitive,
touchscreenportableproductline.Theaeraseriesincorporatesmany
of the same features found in GPSMAP® products like Garmin’s
