When฀ Garmin฀ brought฀ its฀ rst฀ product฀ to฀ market,฀ the฀ GPS฀ 100,฀
pilots฀ saw฀ a฀ glimpse฀ of฀ how฀ GPS฀ technology฀ would฀ change฀ the฀
aviation฀industry.฀Now,฀20฀years฀later,฀aviation฀continues฀to฀be฀one฀
of฀Garmin’s฀core฀segments.฀Pilots฀around฀the฀world฀turn฀to฀Garmin฀
for comprehensive navigation and communication systems that add
safety฀ and฀ situational฀ awareness฀ to฀ each฀ ight.฀ In฀ 2009,฀ Garmin฀
continued฀to฀expand฀its฀aviation฀market฀presence฀by฀introducing฀and฀
certifying฀products฀that฀serve฀a฀wide฀range฀of฀the฀aviation฀industry,฀
from฀ the฀ entry-level฀ experimental฀ and฀ light฀ sport฀ aircraft฀ (LSA)฀
segment฀to฀the฀more฀complex฀Part฀23฀business฀jets.฀
Garmin’s฀G1000 continues to be one of the most popular general
aviation฀suite.Today,฀six฀years฀after฀its฀market฀introduction,theG1000฀
is฀available฀on฀more฀than฀25฀aircraft฀models,฀approximately฀7,000฀
G1000’sare฀ying฀and฀theyhaveaccumulated฀nearly฀2฀million฀hours฀
of฀ ight฀ time.฀ This฀ growth฀ continued฀ in฀ 2009฀ when฀ Piper฀ Aircraft฀
announced the availability of the G1000 in the Piper Meridian, and
Embraer฀began฀delivering฀the฀Phenom฀100฀and฀Phenom฀300฀business฀
jets฀with฀Garmin’s฀all-glass฀Prodigy฀ightdeck.฀In฀addition฀to฀OEMs฀
choosing฀the฀G1000฀as฀factory-installed฀avionics,฀the฀retrot฀market฀
has฀expanded฀ and฀Garmin฀received฀ certication฀for฀G1000฀ retrot฀
installation in the King Air 200 and B200, and the company has
begun฀a฀retrot฀program฀for฀the฀Cessna฀CitationJet.฀
Also฀in฀2009,฀Garmin฀announced฀an฀all-glass฀cockpit฀specically฀for฀
the฀ experimental฀ and฀ LSA฀ market฀ segment.฀ Because฀ experimental฀
and฀LSA฀customers฀often฀build฀their฀own฀aircraft,฀the฀G3X฀is฀an฀all-glass฀
avionics suite that uses a building block design so that pilots can
tailor฀the฀avionics฀to฀their฀aircraft.฀The฀G3X฀has฀features฀similar฀to฀
those฀found฀on฀the฀G1000.฀A฀special฀version฀of฀the฀G3X,฀the฀G300,฀
was฀selected฀for฀the฀Cessna฀162฀SkyCatcher.
In฀July฀at฀EAA฀AirVenture฀in฀Oshkosh,฀Wisconsin,฀Garmin฀announced฀
the฀G500,฀an฀affordably฀priced,฀retrot฀avionics฀suite฀for฀single฀and฀
twin฀engine฀aircraft.฀At฀the฀same฀time,฀Garmin฀announced฀the฀availability฀
of฀synthetic฀vision฀technology฀(SVT)฀to฀the฀G600฀and฀the฀GAD฀43,฀
an฀autopilot฀interface฀for฀the฀G500฀and฀G600฀that฀replaces฀costly-to-
maintain฀attitude฀direction฀indicator฀(ADI)฀gyros฀indicators.฀
Also฀in฀July,฀Garmin฀celebrated฀the฀delivery฀of฀the฀100,000th฀GNS
400/500฀series฀product.฀Garmin฀donated฀the฀100,000th฀unit,฀a฀GNS฀
530W,฀to฀the฀EAA฀Young฀Eagles,฀a฀nonprot฀organization฀designed฀
to get young people interested and involved in aviation.
The฀aera500,฀510,฀550฀and฀560฀lled฀a฀demand฀for฀an฀intuitive,฀
touchscreen฀portable฀product฀line.฀The฀aera฀series฀incorporates฀many฀
of฀ the฀ same฀ features฀ found฀ in฀ GPSMAP®฀ products฀ like฀ Garmin’s฀
