At฀Amsterdam’s฀Marine฀Equipment฀Trade฀Show,฀Garmin฀introduced฀
the฀AIS฀ 600฀—฀the฀company’s฀ rst฀ transceiver฀that฀allows฀ boaters฀
to฀transmit฀Automatic฀Identication฀System฀(AIS)฀data.฀With฀the฀AIS฀
600, mariners can identify and avoid other large sea vessels at long
range฀in฀virtually฀any฀visibility.฀The฀AIS฀600฀features฀ClearTrack™, a
technology฀that฀eliminates฀the฀need฀for฀two฀VHF฀antennas฀—฀saving฀
space฀and฀making฀installation฀easy฀without฀the฀need฀for฀additional฀
hardware.฀ Garmin฀ was฀ the฀ rst฀ manufacturer฀ to฀ bring฀ this฀ unique฀
technology฀to฀the฀AIS฀market.฀
During฀2009฀Garmin฀announced฀HomePort™
,฀a฀PC฀application฀that฀allows฀
customers฀to฀plan฀and฀manage฀trips,฀routes,฀tracks฀and฀waypoints,฀
and฀ transfer฀ them฀ between฀ a฀ PC฀ computer฀ and฀ applicable฀ Garmin฀
chartplotters.฀HomePort฀makes฀it฀easier฀than฀ever฀for฀boaters฀to฀plan฀and฀
review฀all฀of฀their฀on-the-water฀adventures฀before฀heading฀out฀to฀sea.
These฀new฀products฀further฀solidied฀Garmin’s฀position฀as฀a฀leading฀
marine฀ electronics฀ supplier,฀ and฀ in฀ 2009฀ we฀ were฀ able฀ to฀ develop฀
many฀ more฀ OEM฀ partnerships.฀ Regal฀ Boats฀ selected฀ Garmin฀ as฀
the฀ exclusive฀ electronics฀ provider฀ for฀ their฀ 2010฀ product฀ line฀ of฀
luxury฀performance฀runabouts,฀cruisers฀and฀sport฀yachts.฀And฀Fairline฀
Boats,฀ one฀ of฀ the฀ world’s฀ leading฀ luxury฀ performance฀ motor฀ yacht฀
manufacturers,฀is฀using฀Garmin’s฀GHP™ 10V marine autopilot as their
IPS฀autopilot฀solution.฀Fairline฀is฀also฀tting฀standard฀Garmin฀marine฀
electronics throughout its 2010 yacht range.
Mariners฀also฀took฀notice฀of฀the฀NMEA฀2000฀analog฀adapters฀that฀
Garmin฀ released฀ to฀ the฀ market฀ in฀ 2009.฀ These฀ adapters฀ convert฀
analog฀ data฀ from฀ traditional฀ gauges฀ and฀ sensors฀ to฀ digital฀ NMEA฀
2000 data that can be read by the latest generation of instruments
and฀multifunction฀displays.฀In฀combination฀with฀a฀Garmin฀GMI™ 10
instrument฀display,฀these฀adapters฀will฀transform฀an฀out-of-date฀dash
into฀a฀glass,฀digital฀helm.฀Recognized฀for฀their฀cutting-edge฀technology
and unique design, these adapters received the annual Pittman
Innovation฀Award฀by฀SAIL฀magazine.฀
At฀ the฀ beginning฀ of฀ 2010,฀ Garmin฀ also฀ announced฀ the฀ GPSMAP฀
700฀ series฀ —฀ the฀ rst฀ touchscreen฀ controlled฀ standalone฀ marine฀
chartplotter฀ with฀ radar฀ capability฀ and฀ built-in฀ sonar.฀ These฀ 7-inch฀
plotters฀are฀truly฀in฀a฀class฀of฀their฀own,฀bridging฀the฀gap฀between฀
the฀entry-level฀boater฀and฀the฀luxury฀yacht฀customer.฀These฀units฀will฀
begin to ship in the second quarter of 2010, but have already been
well-received฀across฀the฀industry.฀
We recently completed a 6-month, 7,000-mile trip from Palmetto, FL to
Labrador (north of the 53rd Parallel), circumnavigating Newfoundland
and back to Palmetto. Prior to leaving on the trip, I wanted to replace our
existing PC-based plotter with a new piece of equipment. Sun Coast Yacht
Service talked us into purchasing the new Garmin GPSMAP 5215, and it
performed flawlessly and accurately. Whenever a navigation aid of other
appropriate position was available, I checked the Garmin for accuracy — it
absolutely never failed. We dealt with fog, limited navigation aids, heavy
seas, icebergs and unforgiving rock. You should be proud of this piece of
equipment.
