Innovation,performanceandafocuson
servicecontributedtoarecordyearfor
theUnitedStatesPostalService.
Wecontinuedtoserveagrowingdeliv-
ery network while achieving record
levels of service performance and
customer satisfaction. Financially, we
hadoursecondstraightyearofpositive
earnings—withanetincomeof$3.1
billion.Infiscalyear2004,wereduced
ourdebtby$5.5billiontoitslowestlevel
in20years:$1.8billion.Additionally,we
recoveredallprioryears’lossesand,for
thefirsttimesincepostalreorganization
in1971,endedtheyearwithpositive
retainedearnings.
Productivitycontinueditsupwardmove-
mentin2004 as we showed positive
totalfactorproductivitygainsforthefifth
straightyear.Careerstaffingreachedpre-
1985levelsasacombinationofprocess
standardization and new technology
broughtoursystemtoremarkablelevels
ofefficiency.Asourdeliverynetworkof
morethan142millionhomesandbusi-
nessescontinueditsannualexpansion
by some 1.8 million new addresses,
we pursued opportunities to further
enhancetheefficiencyofdeliveryand
mailprocessingoperations.
Our focus also was on bringing new
product and service initiatives to our
customers.Weaddednewvaluetothe
mail —making itquicker,easierand
moreconvenientthaneverforcustom-
ersofallsizestodobusinesswiththe
PostalService.Withnewandenhanced
features, our website, usps.com, has
trulybecomeanonlinePostOffice.
ThePostalService’s37,000retailloca-
tionsofferunrivaledcustomeraccess.At
atimewhencompetitorspursueretail
expansionstrategies,weareenhancing
ourcustomers’retailexperiencethrough
newtechnologiesandalliances.
Andouremployeesplayedkeyrolesin
theseeffortsin2004.Forthefirsttime,
apay-for-performancesystemdirectly
tied the compensation ofallmanage-
mentemployeestotheachievementof
specificcorporateandindividualgoals.
Our workplace continues to improve,
withdemonstratedsignificantincreases
insafetyandemployeesatisfaction.
Whileoursuccesshasbeensignificant,
changingmarketdynamicsstillrequirea
revisiontoourstatutorybusinessmodel
toprotectthelong-termrightofevery
Americantoaffordable,universalmail
service.During2004therewasconsid-
erableactivity inthisarea.Weexpect
the new Congress to continue these
efforts.Atthesametime,westrongly
believethatCongressmustresolvethe
issueofbillionsofdollarsincoststhat
wereplacedonthePostalServiceand
itscustomersasaresultoflegislation
thatadjustedourpaymentstotheCivil
ServiceRetirementSystem.
Oursuccessistiedtothestrategiesof
our Transformation Plan. It has been
at the heart of our efforts to provide
exceptionalserviceandvaluetoevery
American family and business.Along
