Groundbreaker
At first glance, Crystal Banks is not a typical student. A mother of five, she’s gone back to school to get
her degree in computer technology. Considered a “non-traditional” student, 30-year-old Banks actually
represents a growing segment of higher education: people who, for a variety of reasons, are making their
way back to college campuses in droves. Banks is studying computer graphic design at ITT Technical
Institute in Indianapolis, Indiana, and is on the honors list. She works as a receptionist during the day and
attends school in the evenings. Her Sallie Mae loan, combined with a grant from the school, makes it pos-
sible financially. Says Banks: “My family has been extremely supportive. But I wouldn’t have been able to
go back to school without Sallie Mae.” That’s what Sallie Mae’s all about: the power of possibility.
