Scholar-Athlete
Kim Burton graduated from Johns Hopkins University in December 2001 with a B.A. in psychology.
“I really wanted to go to Johns Hopkins because of its reputation and its size. I knew I could play
field hockey there and get a good education,” says Burton. A Maryland Distinguished Scholar,
Burton received a partial scholarship from the university, but she needed a combination of loans
to make up the difference. “Without financial aid, I would have had to transfer to a different
school,” says Burton, who worked several jobs during her college career. Sallie Mae loans supple-
mented the funds from her scholarship. “Sallie Mae made all the difference,” says Burton. That’s
what Sallie Mae’s all about: making a difference.
