In 1994, LG Electronics announced a Self- Declaration for a Cleaner Environment, the rst in Korea. Since then, we are not only
pursuing the challenge of advancing our production technology, but also taking steps to reduce the use of hazardous substances in our products, make them energy efcient, and increase the recycling ratio. Through these efforts, the number of our environment- friendly products has been greatly increased.
Taking a wide-ranging view of sustainability, including its economic, environmental, and social aspects, we revised our CSM (Corporate Sustainability Management) standards upward by integrating environmental, energy, safety, and health management concerns. We strictly follow these enhanced standards, looking forward to realizing sustainability in every area. As a part of our commitment to produce eco- friendly products, LG Electronics declared in July 2005 that it would eliminate the six hazardous substances specied in the EU’s RoHS Directive from all its products, including Pb-free soldering. Furthermore, we not only
use stricter guidelines for management of hazardous substances than those established by the EU, but also prohibit all our suppliers from using hazardous substances in their products, such as raw materials, packaging materials, batteries, and other materials. In addition to the hazardous substances restricted by law, LG Electronics has declared
the total abolition of VOCs, PVC, BFR, and other hazardous materials demanded by Greenpeace and other environment-related NGOs in 2006. These plans have been put into action since early 2007.
Reusing or recycling waste products is vital to conserving the planet’s resources and it is the key to minimizing electronic wastes. We
have therefore created several major design approaches and tools to make recycling easy and efcient. For example, we developed the ATROiD software to evaluate our products’ recycling rate at the earliest design stage and to advise product developers how to make more recyclable products.
Improving energy efciency is very important, not merely to reduce costs, but to help solve environmental problems, such as global warming and the depletion of nonrenewable natural resources. We are therefore making a
major effort to design products that minimize power consumption in on-mode, standby- mode, and off-mode. Our strategic plan to reduce standby power consumption to one watt or lower has been in place since August 2005, and we have already designed many products that satisfy that plan. Our efforts to increase energy efciency are playing an important role in improving the brand image of our products. We continue to diversify the range of our eco-products, taking into consideration all the Eco-design aspects mentioned above.
