paymenttermsandtheireconomiccondition,aswellaswhetherwecanobtainsufficientcreditinsurance.Anysignificantchangesinanyofthesecriteriawouldimpact
management’sestimatesinestablishingourallowancefordoubtfulaccounts.
Wevalueinventoryatthelowerofcostormarket.Weregularlyreviewinventoryquantitiesonhandandintheretailchannelandrecordaprovisionforexcessorobsolete
inventorybasedonthefutureexpecteddemandforourproducts.Significantchangesindemandforourproductswouldimpactmanagement’sestimatesinestablishing
ourinventoryprovision.
Software Development Costs.Softwaredevelopmentcostsincludepaymentsmadetoindependentsoftwaredevelopersunderdevelopmentagreements,aswellasdirect
costsincurredforinternallydevelopedproducts.
WeaccountforsoftwaredevelopmentcostsinaccordancewithStatementofFinancialAccountingStandard(“SFAS”)No.86,“AccountingfortheCostsofComputer
SoftwaretoBeSold,Leased,orOtherwiseMarketed.”Softwaredevelopmentcostsarecapitalizedoncetechnologicalfeasibilityofaproductisestablishedandsuch
costsaredeterminedtoberecoverable.Technologicalfeasibilityofaproductencompassesbothtechnicaldesigndocumentationandgamedesigndocumentation.For
productswhereproventechnologyexists,thismayoccurearlyinthedevelopmentcycle.Technologicalfeasibilityisevaluatedonaproduct-by-productbasis.Priortoa
product’s release, we expense, as part of cost of sales—software royalties and amortization, capitalized costs when we believe such amounts are not recoverable.
Capitalizedcostsforthoseproductsthatarecancelledorabandonedarechargedtoproductdevelopmentexpenseintheperiodofcancellation.Amountsrelatedto
softwaredevelopmentwhicharenotcapitalizedarechargedimmediatelytoproductdevelopmentexpense.Weevaluatethefuturerecoverabilityofcapitalizedamounts
onaquarterlybasis.Therecoverabilityofcapitalizedsoftwaredevelopmentcostsisevaluatedbasedontheexpectedperformanceofthespecificproductsforwhichthe
costsrelate.Criteriausedtoevaluateexpectedproductperformanceinclude:historicalperformanceofcomparableproductsusingcomparabletechnology;ordersfor
theproductpriortoitsrelease;andestimatedperformanceofasequelproductbasedontheperformanceoftheproductonwhichthesequelisbased.
Commencinguponproductrelease,capitalizedsoftwaredevelopmentcostsareamortizedtocostofsales—softwareroyaltiesandamortizationbasedontheratioof
currentrevenuestototalprojectedrevenues,generallyresultinginanamortizationperiodofsixmonthsorless.Forproductsthathavebeenreleasedinpriorperiods,we
evaluatethefuturerecoverabilityofcapitalizedamountsonaquarterlybasis.Theprimaryevaluationcriterionisactualtitleperformance.
Significantmanagementjudgmentsandestimatesareutilizedintheassessmentofwhentechnologicalfeasibilityisestablished,aswellasintheongoingassessmentof
therecoverabilityofcapitalizedcosts.Inevaluatingtherecoverabilityofcapitalizedcosts,theassessmentofexpectedproductperformanceutilizesforecastedsales
amountsandestimatesofadditionalcoststobeincurred.Ifrevisedforecastedoractualproductsalesarelessthanand/orrevisedforecastedoractualcostsaregreater
thantheoriginalforecastedamountsutilizedintheinitialrecoverabilityanalysis,thenetrealizablevaluemaybelowerthanoriginallyestimatedinanygivenquarter,which
couldresultinanimpairmentcharge.
Intellectual Property Licenses.Intellectualpropertylicensecostsrepresentlicensefeespaidtointellectualpropertyrightsholdersforuseoftheirtrademarks,copyrights,
software,technologyorotherintellectualpropertyorproprietaryrightsinthedevelopmentofourproducts.Dependingupontheagreementwiththerightsholder,wemay
obtaintherightstouseacquiredintellectualpropertyinmultipleproductsovermultipleyears,oralternatively,forasingleproduct.
Weevaluatethefuturerecoverabilityofcapitalizedintellectualpropertylicensesonaquarterlybasis.Therecoverabilityofcapitalizedintellectualpropertylicensecosts
isevaluatedbasedontheexpectedperformanceofthespecificproductsinwhichthelicensedtrademarkorcopyrightistobeused.Asmanyofourintellectualproperty
licensesextendformultipleproductsovermultipleyears,wealsoassesstherecoverabilityofcapitalizedintellectualpropertylicensecostsbasedoncertainqualitative
