K E E P I N G T H I N G S W E L L - M A N A G E D
Dear Shareholders,
In a year that tested the resilience of the American economy, AirTran
Airways again proved that its Crew Members, business model and
commitment to innovation are a combination for success. For the
fourth consecutive year, your company was profitable. In the worst
year in aviation history, we succeeded where many did not. We
achieved a net of $10.7 million from operating revenues of $733.4
million. We flew 5.6 billion revenue passenger miles (RPMs) in
2002a 24% increase over 2001. And our capacity grew 26%, to 8.3
billion available seat miles (ASMs) resulting in a year-end load factor
of 67.6%. Our continued success is no coincidence. It is
the result of 5,000 Crew Members who make it their business to
ensure that the people who fly with us experience new levels of safety
and customer service. It is this sense of personal responsibility that
has driven us to new heights. One of our major headlines in 2002
was growth. We increased service and margins in a very measured,
controlled manner. When many in the industry contracted, we began
service in five cities and expanded in many more. The fact we were
able to expand service so dramatically underscores what we have
known all along; providing a superior product attracts more and more
passengers. In 2002, we safely served 9.7 million of them, a 16.3%
