CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
The Social IN management philosophy express our commit-
ment to help all people achieve health and happiness in their
lives by working as an integral member of society, by sharing
our values and by offering new values to society through our
business activities. We also create a win-win relationship
with all stakeholders through our corporate social responsi-
bility (CSR) activities.
As part of such efforts, since 2004, Olympus has par-
ticipated in the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), to
cooperate further in achieving the Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs),* which aim to halve poverty by 2015. Driving
toward achieving MDG Goal 7: “Ensure Environmental
Sustainability, Olympus held a photography contest
“Picture This: Caring for the Earth in 2009 jointly with the
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and AFP
Foundation established by LAgence France-Presse to raise
awareness about environmental issues affecting Africa. In
2010, we held our second photography contest “Picture This:
We Can End Poverty” to announce our approach to achieving
MDGs.
* Millennium Development Goals (MDGs): The eight goals set up by integrating
international development targets adopted in the United Nations Millennium
Summit held in New York in September 2000 and other conferences and
summits held before the Millennium Summit. International society should aim to
achieve all the eight targets by 2015.
In addition, with the aim of reducing its environmental
burden, Olympus established the Carbon 1/2 2020 long-term
program to realize sustainable low-carbon society. This
program aims by 2020 to halve total CO2 emissions from the
entire life cycle of Olympus products compared with the
fiscal 2007 figure. Pursuing this program, Olympus is aiming
to become a leading company in environmental activities.
Furthermore, Olympus established the Olympus Group
Procurement Policy in 2005 to ensure that Olympus deals with
companies that are committed to compliance with laws and
regulations, respect for human rights and labor standards
and the prevention of corruption. Under this policy, we inform
suppliers about the Olympus Groups basic stance on the
procurement of materials and services whilst seeking their
cooperation. Our aim is to expand our CSR commitment by
implementing CSR activities in partnership with our suppliers.
