OTHERS
In the Others business, Olympus mainly engages in the manu-
facture and sale of industrial endoscopes, non-destructive
testing devices and printers as well as system development.
Adding to this lineup, ITX Corporations business incubation
operations—mainly in such areas as life science, network &
technology, mobile phones and business innovation—were
transferred from the Information & Communication Business to
the Others business in fiscal 2010 against the backdrop of ITX
Corporations management structural reform. In support of that
reform, Olympus will invest in mobile solutions, mobile content
services, the development and sale of business packaging
software, the sale of network infrastructure systems, and the
sale of semiconductor-related devices and electronics devices.
During the fiscal year under review, the Others business
recorded a 12.7% decrease in sales to ¥87,992 million (US$978
million), and an operating loss of ¥2,600 million (US$29 mil-
lion), showing a solid improvement from the operating loss of
¥14,710 million recorded in the previous fiscal year. This was
attributable to the decrease in goodwill amortization due to the
inclusion of a subsidiary in consolidation.
In the non-destructive testing business area, sales were
strong for the new IPLEX LX/LT industrial videoscope with
excellent operability, functionality and durability as well as for
a new phased-array ultrasonic testing instrument. However,
revenue from the non-destructive testing business segment
decreased due to sluggish capital investment in the industrial
inspection market, especially for automobile industry-use
equipment.
In the information equipment field, sales declined due to
the economic slump, despite robust sales of a new high-speed
inkjet printer.
In the biomedical materials field, sales of OSferion artificial
bone replacement material were strong both in Japan and
overseas. Olympus strived to expand sales of other products,
while reducing costs.
OUTLOOK FOR FISCAL 2011
Concentrating the Groups management resources in the
creation of next-generation businesses, Olympus will acceler-
ate the searching and nurturing of new businesses, which are
expected to improve the performance in this business area.
In fiscal 2011, Olympus anticipates sales of ¥57 billion and
an operating loss of ¥3 billion.
