Thirty years ago, in the backyard of a home in Highland Park, Michigan, an idea began to
take shape. Brothers Will and Norm Dabish were into boxing and training, and their sister,
Krystal, wanted to keep in shape with rigorous workouts. But there was no gym in the
community. So the trio founded one in their garage.
Today, Will’s sons J.R. and Henry head the licensing organization for Powerhouse Gyms,
one of the most recognized names in the fitness industry. The Dabish Brothers Business Group
oversees the Powerhouse enterprise, comprising over 300 gyms in 37 states and eight countries.
Powerhouse Gyms recently established a business banking relationship with Huntington.
“It’s a very healthy relationship (no pun intended) for a lot of reasons, said Vice President,
Jack Slocum, of Huntingtons West Bloomfield, Michigan office. The first thing J.R. said
when we met him was: ‘We like the idea of having someone nearby for us. As the local bank
with national resources, we could be there for him.
Powerhouse Gyms’ people take special pride in what they feel differentiates them from
competitors. “We’re committed to servicing fitness enthusiasts, says J.R. “We’ve always
believed that the only way we’re going to sustain membership is to give people results.
When you are a member of Powerhouse Gyms, you are more than a membership number.
We care about helping each and every one of our members reach their goals.
J.R. says he sees “the same serious dedication to results” in his Huntington representatives.
“They went out of their way to learn about our business, he says, “to learn about us personally
and the way we think.
He also appreciates the teamwork within Huntington that led to his larger interface
with the bank. “I was fortunate enough to meet Linda Bomberski, a Private Banking Officer
with Huntingtons Private Financial Group in the Birmingham office, he recalls.“I told her
about our business and what we hoped to do, and she believed in me. Linda referred
Powerhouse Gyms to Huntingtons business bankers.
The Huntington-Powerhouse Gyms relationship involves a wide range of business
and personal banking products and services, including two construction loans. “There’s
still plenty of room for expanding our relationship with Powerhouse Gyms, says Jack
Slocum, and with their international operations, who knows how much larger the
relationship might grow?”
Powerhouse Gyms: an exercise in free enterprise.
