Deutsche Post World Net Annual Report 2008
Discontinued operations
Revenue and earnings performance
Changed reporting structure
On  September , Deutsche Post agreed to sell a minority shareholding
in Deutsche Postbank to Deutsche Bank in the  rst quarter of . We have
adapted our reporting structure accordingly.  e Pension Service was transferred
from the  Division to the mail business.  e remaining segment
consists only of Postbank and has therefore been reported under “discontinued opera-
tions” since the third quarter of .
Financial crisis hampers Postbank earnings
e Deutsche Postbank Group was impacted by one-time charges as a result of
the global  nancial market crisis, especially in the second half of . In addition to
other factors, Postbanks earnings situation was noticeably impacted by the write-downs
on Postbanks exposure to investment bank Lehman Brothers and Icelandic banks as
well as the decrease in equity holdings to be recognised in pro t or loss – announced
as an e ort to reduce capital market-related risks and portfolios.
With respect to net interest income and net fee and commission income –
Postbanks customer business-related core income gures – the bank either reached or
exceeded the previous year’s  gure. By contrast, net trading income and net income from
investment securities declined signi cantly as a consequence of the  nancial crisis.
In spite of a clear rise in the rate of in ation and several special factors, adminis-
trative expenses were only slightly higher than the prior year level.  e allowance for
losses on loans and advances rose, however, due to the e ects of the  nancial market
crisis.
us, pro t or loss from operating activities from discontinued opera-
tions fell by  , million from  , million in  to   million in the year
under review.
In line with this, the pro t or loss a er tax from discontinued operations in
was   million, well below the prior-year  gure of   million.
Postbanks operating business performed well in all major product segments
despite a continued di cult climate in the German retail banking business.
Deutsche Postbank  provides details of its business performance in  in
its own annual report, to be published on  March .
