MITIGATING THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE
LG Electronics announced voluntary greenhouse
gas emission reduction targets in 2009 and es-
tablished greenhouse gas inventories at all its
domestic and overseas manufacturing sites. In
2010 we achieved 160,000 tons of emission re-
ductions at the manufacturing stage, compared
with 2008 levels, through equipment upgrades,
process improvements and waste heat conver-
sion. It is estimated that a further 12,750,000
tons of reductions from the product use stage
was achieved, compared with 2007 emission lev-
els. LG Electronics is an active participant in the
Carbon Disclosure Project, and will continue to
provide transparent information on its efforts to
reduce greenhouse gas carbon emissions.
GREEN FUTURE BUSINESSES
With an eye toward the needs of future genera-
tions, LG Electronics is actively expanding into
green technologies such as solar power, LED
lighting, total air conditioning HVAC and smart
grid businesses. We have participated in a smart
grid test bed project involving Korea, Germany
and the US, and in 2010 we entered the water
treatment business with green technologies.
LG Electronics carries out constant R&D to be able
to continuously introduce a broad range of innovative greener
products and services. LG has been a green innovation leader since
first announcing its environmental vision in 1994, and has worked to
reduce the environmental impact of its products by practicing life-cycle
management from raw material sourcing through to final disposal.
LG ELECTRONICS’ GREENER PRODUCTS
LG Electronics has established a Green Product
Strategy and made continuous efforts to develop
greener products. Everything we make meets
the EU’s RoHS, and REACH, and we are steadily
replacing non-regulated substances with proven
harmless substitutes. In 2010 the company intro-
duced a solar cell-equipped hybrid air condition-
er, and our monitors acquired SPC (Sustainable
Product Certification) from UL Environment. LG
Electronics’ bottom-freezer refrigerator was se-
lected as a top example of trend-setting “eco-chic”
products at the 2010 Maison & Objet in Paris.
GREEN PROGRAM FOR BUSINESS PARTNERS
LGE Green Program Plus is part of our Growing
Together system of partnership with our suppli-
ers to achieve shared sustainability goals. We
work cooperatively with all of our business part-
ners to help them raise their own environmental
standards to our level, providing whatever they
require. Our company has established long-term
low-carbon purchasing targets, set at KRW 50
trillion in 2020. LG Electronics is also helping its
supplier network meet the latest standards for
green supply chain management.
TAKE-BACK OF E-WASTE
Modern thinking on product lifecycles has
changed the way that responsible manufacturing
companies handle every aspect of their busi-
ness. In this era of rapid technological change,
consumers enjoy the benefits of ever-improving
products. This also means that product life-
cycles continue to shrink, presenting an e-waste
problem that demands attention. LG Electronics
operates centers in 63 countries to take back its
products so that they can be maximally recycled,
thereby reducing landfill waste and conserving
valuable resources.
