J. David Nelson
J. David Nelson, MBA, serves on the Board Audit and Finance Committee and the AARP Foundation
Board of Directors. He is COO of the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship, a
nonprot educational foundation focused on teaching entrepreneurial and life skills to young
people from low-income communities. Previously, he spent 33 years with IBM. He serves on the
advisory board of Envision EMI, which creates unique experiences for high-achieving young people.
He was named a Purpose Prize Fellow by Civic Ventures.
N. Joyce Payne
N. Joyce Payne, EdD, chairs the AARP Foundation Board of Directors and serves on the Board Audit
and Finance Committee. Dr. Payne is executive director of the National Endowment for the Public
Trust, an organization committed to advancing principled leadership, inspired scholarship, and
trusted stewardship. Previously she was director of human resources and minority programs for
the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges. She founded the Thurgood
Marshall Scholarship Fund, which has awarded over $50 million in scholarship assistance and
capacity-building support.
Charles Reed
Charles E. Reed serves on the Board Governance and CEO Evaluation Committees, and the AARP
Insurance Trust. Mr. Reed is a long-term care consultant for C.E. Reed and Associates. He was
previously deputy secretary of Washington State’s Department of Social and Health Services and
assistant secretary of Washington’s Administration of Aging and Adult Services. Previously, he
served on AARP’s National Policy Council. He chairs the Washington State Home Care Quality
Authority and the National Academy for State Health Policy’s Long-Term Care Committee.
T. George Rowan
T. George Rowan, PhD, serves on the Board Member Value/Social Impact Committee and the
AARP Foundation Board of Directors. He previously served as AARP Michigan State President. Dr.
Rowan is a professor at Michigan State University. Previously he was director of the universitys
David Walker Research Institute. Dr. Rowan was also a principal in the Grand Rapids Public School
System. Dr. Rowan serves on the Ingham Regional Medical Center Prostate Cancer Awareness
Committee and with the American Cancer Society.
Byron Thames
T. Byron Thames, M.D., serves on the Board Member Value/Social Impact Committee and the
Board of AARP Services, Inc. Dr. Thames is medical director of Darden Restaurants, Siemans
Westinghouse, and COMPNET, and a certied medical review ofcer for drug screening. Earlier, he
was medical director for Walt Disney World and served nearly 25 years as its chief medical ofcer.
Dr. Thames is a medical issues consultant/speaker and a medical provider for a mobile clinic for
the elderly and a homeless program.
