On the first afternoon of Life@50+, more than 7,000 AARP members, volunteers, staff, and visitors
gathered at the Lincoln Memorial for a joyous celebration of AARP’s birthday. The 90-minute program
was hosted by TV personality Leeza Gibbons. Singers Wynonna, Patti Austin, and Jamia uplifted the
crowd. Inspiring remarks were shared by tennis great and AARP Fitness Ambassador Martina Navratilova,
astronaut Buzz Aldrin, actress Sally Field, Olympic medalist Dara Torres, and NASCAR legend Richard
Petty.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s daughter, Elder Bernice King, read an excerpt from her father’s “I Have a
Dream,” nearly 45 years to the day after his historic remarks at the Lincoln Memorial. Noting that “service
is an American legacy,” she praised “the power of one person—one Abraham Lincoln, one Martin Luther
King, Jr., one (AARP founder) Ethel Percy Andrus”—to make a difference in the world.
