Houston volunteer Mary Alice Jackson gathered armloads of Divided We Fail pledges.
Younger Generations
More than 5,000 people became friends of Divided We Fail through Facebook and MySpace. Photos,
videos, discussion boards and news posted on these social networking sites introduced Divided We Fail to
young people through a medium they were comfortable with. And they responded enthusiastically. College
and university students got involved with Divided We Fail through campus pledge drives, homecoming
football games and presidential debate-watching parties.
In addition, AARP and the University of California/Los Angeles sponsored the “Stolen Dreams Short Film
Competition.” Film students conveyed the hardships caused by Americans’ lack of health and financial
security. The poignant winner—“The Cure,” by UCLA’s Anthony Onah—focused on the medical
nightmare faced by a working mother after her young son was injured.
