RESEARCH AND DEVELO PMENT
>Based o n its co re co mpetence in O PTO -Digital Techno lo g y,
O lympus engages in research and develo pment in the o ptics, dig -
ital imaging, and micro processing fields to pro vide new value to
society.
In fiscal 2 0 0 4 , research and development expenses were
¥3 8 ,6 7 1 million (US$ 3 5 2 million), an increase o f 11.3% over
the previous fiscal year. Research and develo pment expenditures
were 6 .1 % o f net sales.
Restructuring of R&D
>In April 2 0 0 3 , O lympus restructured its Co rpo rate Research and
Develo pment Center by reestablishing the center and creating
the Future Creation Laborato ry. The Co rpo rate Research and
Develo pment Center undertakes the development of technolo gy
for pro duct differentiation going o ne step beyond Business G ro ups,
and the latest technolo gies that lead to the creatio n of new busi-
ness in the future. The Future Creatio n Labo rato ry engages in
lo ng-term research in new business do mains.
The Co rporate Research and Develo pment Center is in charge
o f research in three fields that are also crucial elements o f the
Co rpo rate Technolo gy strategies. The first is high-definitio n video
systems develo pment; the seco nd is the develo pment o f micro -
electro mechanical systems (MEMS) compo nents and MEMS
foundry services; and the third is the develo pment o f new medical
businesses including regenerative medicine and capsule endo -
sco pes.
Research Results
>Research results during this fiscal year included the develo pment
o f the micro mirro r scanner with MEMS technolo gy for o ur
O LS3 0 0 0 co nfo cal scanning laser microscope. W ith the micro mir-
ro r scanner the O LS3 0 0 0 has a more compact bo dy and better
vibration resistance is realized; and using the co mbination o f a
laser microscope with the worlds finest reso lution o f 0 .1 2 μm
and an o ptical micro sco pe, 3 -D observation in co lo r is possible.
In additio n, based o n its advanced imaging o ptical techno lo -
gy, O lympus has developed a free-shaped prism type thin-lens
unit for cellular phones with a built-in camera, featuring the
slimmest designs in the industry. W itho ut enlarging the thickness
o f the lens unit, O lympus has made it possible to apply more than
2 -meg apixel reso lutio ns to cellular phones.
