ro surgery, features

weightless feeling.
LUCERA, which was released in 2 002 incorpo rating the wo rlds
first HDTV-compatible endosco pe system, owing to favorable
demand in Japan and stro ng sales overseas. In additio n, a trade-
in pro motion against o ur co nventio nal model and competito rs
pro ducts co ntributed to sales in Euro pe and the United States.
M inimally Invasive Products
>Sales o f minimally invasive pro ducts, co mprising surgical pro d-
ucts, endosco pic ultraso und systems, and endo -therapy devices,
increased 1 5 .9 % year o n year to ¥8 2 ,8 8 6 millio n (US$ 7 5 4 mil-
lio n).
Although co nditions in the Japanese medical market remain
severe, O lympus reinforced its sales structure fo r endo -therapy
devices and secured higher sales. O verseas, mainly in Euro pe
and the United States, O lympus bo lstered its sales structures and
engaged in sales pro motio n activities for mainstay pro ducts,
including the endo-surgery video camera system, VISERA, and
endo -therapy devices featuring an expanded lineup of dispos-
ables. As a result o f these efforts, demand remained stro ng and
sales increased significantly over the fiscal year.
In February 2 0 0 4 , O lympus released EndoArm, the wo rlds
first endo sco pic system fo r neuro surgery. The field o f neuro -

surgery has been waiting for the development o f a specializ ed
endo sco pic system co mpatible with extremely complex pro ce -
dures, such as o n blood vessels less than 1 millimeter in diameter
and for the removal o f tumors while circumventing nerves. Based
o n its technolo gies and expertise accumulated in the field o f
endo sco pes and surg ical microscopes, O lympus is co nfident
Endo Arm will contribute to the develo pment o f minimally invasive
medicine in the field o f neuro surg ery.
M edical Systems G roup Split-O ff
>O n O ctober 1 , 2 0 0 4 , O lympus plans to split o ff the Medical
Systems G ro up into the wholly o wned subsidiary O lympus
Medical Systems Co rp., which will handle the manufacturing and
sales of medical endo sco pes and o ther medical equipment.
Senior Executive Managing O fficer Ko ji Miyata, the current
Medical Systems G ro up President, is to beco me president o f the
new co mpany.
