REVIEW O F O PERATIO N S
>The Imaging Systems G ro up handles digital cameras, film cam-
eras and voice reco rders. Sales during fiscal 2 0 0 4 ro se 2 1 .2 %
from the previous fiscal year to ¥296,730 million (US$ 2 ,6 9 8 mil-
lio n), continuing substantial growth in-line with expansion in the
digital camera market. O perating inco me declined 16.7% to
¥1 5 ,1 5 8 million (US$ 1 3 8 million) o wing to an increase in basic
co sts while prices for digital cameras decreased. Do mestic sales
ro se 4 .6 % to ¥4 7 ,7 9 4 millio n (US$ 4 3 4 million), while overseas
sales advanced 25.0% to ¥2 4 8,936 million (US$2,263 millio n).
Digital Cameras
>Sales o f digital cameras climbed 43.8 % to ¥251,344 millio n
(US$ 2 ,2 8 5 millio n).
Spurred o n by expansio n in the glo bal digital camera market,
especially in Euro pe and the United States, shipments of digital
cameras so ared 7 1 .2 % to 48.6 millio n units wo rldwide. O lympus
to o k an ag gressive sales posture and expanded its pro duct line-
up in response to market needs, such as with the μ[mju:] DIG ITAL
(Stylus Digital in the U.S. and μ[mju:] Digital in Euro pe) featur-
ing a weather-proof designthe first for a digital camera. Sales
volume increased co nsiderably, fro m 4.4 millio n units in the pre-
vio us fiscal year to 7.4 million units in the current fiscal year,
o wing to ro bust demand in mainly the United States and signifi-
cant sales growth in Euro pe and Asia.
