scope excels in oper-

O ptical Equipment
>Sales o f industrial micro sco pes were ¥1 7 ,5 0 5 million (US$ 1 5 9
million), an increase o f 3 .2 % from the previous fiscal year.
Industrial micro sco pes are used as inspection equipment o n
pro ductio n lines in high-tech plants for semico nductors and LCDs.
In fiscal 2 0 0 4 , sales o f industrial micro sco pes increased o wing to
a no ticeable increase in demand from vigorous capital invest-
ment by electronics manufacturers in Japan and Asia in semicon-
ducto rs, electro nic compo nents, flat-panel displays, and liquid
crystal compo nents for digital ho me electro nics fro m the seco nd
half o f the fiscal year under review.
Sales o f industrial endsco pes were ¥9 ,2 8 8 million (US$84 mil-
lio n), an increase of 0 .5 % fro m the previous fiscal year. Industrial
endo sco pes use endo sco pic techno lo g y that o riginated in the
medical field, for the non-destructive testing o f jet engines, pipes
in buildings, and large-scale machinery. In fiscal 2 0 0 4 , sales
were largely unchanged fro m the previous fiscal year due to slug-
gish demand in Japan and the adverse effects o f SARS and the
war in Iraq.
Information Equipment
>Sales o f industrial-use printers declined 16 .6 % to ¥4,022 millio n
(US$ 3 7 millio n).
In September 2 0 0 3, O lympus established the O rtek Co rpo ration
in a jo int venture with Riso Kagaku Co rpo ratio n to handle the
planning, develo pment, manufacture, and sale o f pro ducts that
apply new inkjet techno lo g y. In O cto ber 2 003, O lympus jointly
develo ped the O rphis HC5000 high-speed business printer with
the O rtek Corporatio n. The new product is expected to co ntribute
to sales from fiscal 2 0 0 5 . Sales o f barco de scanners dropped
9 .0 % to ¥1 0 ,4 6 3 million (US$9 5 millio n), owing to fewer sales
to business partners.
