Natio nal Cost of Medical Care

leading to greater management efficiency fo r the entire ho spi-
tal. W ith this system nurses use a Personal Digital Assistant
(PDA) unit to scan barcodes on drug prescriptions and wrist-
bands o n patients, crosschecking to ensure that dosag es are in-
line with do ctors o rders, and that pro per care is given. The
treatment details entered into the PDA are immediately trans-
ferred to an electro nic care card, eliminating the po ssibility of
input o mission and increasing o peration efficiency, as well as
allo wing fo r more precise manag ement o f invento ry. O lympus
develo pment efforts, carefully incorpo rating the needs o f doc-
to rs and hospitals, have resulted in this extremely innovative
pro duct. Develo ped with the cooperation o f the Internatio nal
Medical Center of Japan and Mo rio ka Red Cro ss Ho spital, the
system was launched in April 2 0 0 4 .
Rigoro us effo rts to impro ve the efficiency of diag nostic pro -
cedures are no w being carried o ut in the United States. The
endo sco pic examinations that used to be performed in the ho s-
pital are no w increasingly being done in other locations. There
are no w three to fo ur thousand Ambulatory Surgical Centers
(ASCs) that offer endosco pic examinations, where the pro ce-
dure can be performed o n an outpatient basis. Because ASCs
are extremely businesslike, their management consultants have
all built up pro g rams that allo w them to run business simulatio ns,
helping them to increase efficiency and lo wer co sts. It is impos-
sible to say whether Japanese hospitals will ado pt a similar sys-
tem or will head in an independent directio n, but it is certain
that there will be increasing demand for solutions like So lemio
NURSE that pro vide econo mical added value in hardware.
Q.4:
In conclusion, what is your vision for the M edical Systems
G roup?
>W e seek to be the most respected brand name wo rldwide in the
medical equipment field. And what do es it mean to be respect-
ed in the medical equipment business? O ur perfo rmance is
judged by every phone call we receive. If our respo nse o n the
telepho ne is considered poor, this alo ne will diminish us. To
prevent this fro m happening, we must do whatever is necessary
to build a structure whereby the o bjectives of the Medical
Systems G ro up are shared thro ughout the entire o rganizatio n.
W e must also recognize that o ur business is one that deals with
disease.
The business o f medicine co ntributes to the well being of o ur
society. And it fills us with jo y to know that we are helping peo -
ple; we seek to pro vide medical equipment and service that are
safe, reliable, and effective.
