ASuddenShiftintheBusinessEnvironment
BusinessconditionsformanufacturerssuchasNikonhave
changedsignificantly.TheslowdownintheUnitedStates
economyhasledtostagnanteconomicgrowthworldwide.
ThewarinIraqandtheongoingtensionintheMiddle
Eastunderscoretheinstabilityoftheinternationalpicture.
Intensifiedpricecompetitionisproducinganaccelerated
shifttowardmanufacturinginoffshorelocations.Anextend-
edslumpintheITsectorhashitthesemiconductorindustry
hard.Thesevariousfactorshaveallhadnegativerepercus-
sionsforus.Inaddition,greatercompetitionaroundthe
worldintheareaofintellectualproperty,especiallypatents,
isjustoneaspectoftheongoingmarchofglobalization.The
challengeforusistofindwaysofrespondingtothesenew
andalteredformsofcompetition.
Ourbusinessisconcentratedinthreemainbusiness
segments:PrecisionEquipment,ImagingProducts,and
Instruments.Althoughbusinessconditionsdiffermarkedly
betweenthesethreeareas,theydohaveonethingincom-
mon—anextremelyrapidpaceofchange.Therealityisthat
ineachofthesesegmentswehavetodevelopbusiness
againstthebackgroundofahighlyunstableenvironment,
inwhichanewrevolution-inducingfactorcouldappearat
anytime.
ThechallengefacingNikonistoconstructoperational
systemscapableofrespondingquicklyandagilelytothese
kindsofchange.Thisrequiresustoinvestourlimited
resourcestomaximumeffectingrowthsectorswhilealso
ensuringthatweconductallourbusinessatthehighestlev-
elsofefficiency.Decision-makingprocessesmustobviously
displaysimilaragility.Notonlymustweputinplacethe
managementsystemsthatwillhelpusreform,wemustall
individuallymakemajorchangesinthewaywethink.
ProgressinImplementingFundamentalStructural
Reforms
Wehavealreadyimplementedanumberofmeasures
designedtocreatefast-responsereactiveoperationalsys-
tems.Weintroducedanin-housecompanysystemin1999
and,ayearlater,weformulated“VisionNikon21,”apolicy
documentforthefirstdecadeofthe21stcenturythatsets
outourforemostbusinesspriorities.In2001,weintroduced
anexecutiveofficersystem.Alltheseinitiativeshavecollec-
tivelylaidthegroundworkforreform.
Weundertookvariousstructuralreformmeasuresacross
theNikonGroupintheyearendedMarch2003inacon-
certedattempttoreinforceourearningsstructure.Wemade
furtherheadcountadjustmentsattheconsolidatedlevel
throughanexpandedearlyretirementprogramforemploy-
ees,whichhelpedtolowerfixedcosts.Wepursuedthe
liquidationandreorganizationofunprofitableoperationsto
promotethemoreeffectivedistributionofresourceswithin
theNikonGroup.Weworkedtoreducevariablecostswithin
eachbusinessunit.Allthesestructuralreformsformedpart
ofamajorrestructuringinitiative.
Thesestructuralreformsaregeneratingpositiveresults
slowlybutsteadily.Unfortunately,theydidnotmakeasuf-
ficientlymajorimpactonourfinancialresultsintheyear
endedMarch2003.Whilecontinuingwiththeseefforts,
wewillthereforeputinplaceadditionalmeasurestoboost
operatingefficiencyandtherebyimplementfundamental
improvementsinourearningsstructure.
FocusonStrengtheningCoreBusinesses
Themostimportantissueforusasweundertakethese
reformsistostrengthenthecompetitivenessofourcore
operations.Althoughconditionsdodifferbetweensectors,
ourcommonaimistotakemeasuresthatwillestablish
Nikonasthetopmanufacturerineachindustryinwhichwe
operatesothatwecanmagnifythefuturepotentialofall
ourbusinesses.
Thefirstaspectofthiscompetitivenessdriveistorein-
forcethepowerofourproductstoleadmarkets.Thismeans
thatwemustcapitalizeonourstrengthstolaunchahead
ofourcompetitorstheadvancedproductsthatwillgener-
ategrowth.Justaswehavebecomethepioneeringmarket
innovatorinSL R-typedigitalcameras,ourgreatestmission
asamanufactureristosupplysocietywithproductspacked
withthehighvaluethatonlyNikoncanadd.Indeed,this
missionisonethingthathasnotchangedatall.
Indigitalcameraimagesensorandlensunits,weplanto
manufacturemorecomponentsin-housesothatwecanadd
greatervaluetothesekeyitems.Thissortofactionhelpsto
leveragethestrengthsofNikonasweworktobuildupthe
competitivenessofourproductrange.
Next,weareworkingtomakeourbusinessesmorecost-
competitiveandmoreprofitable.Whenbusinessconditions
remainasharshastheyarenow,ourchallengeasamanu-
facturermustbetospeedupbothproductdevelopment
andproduction.Wearethereforeimprovingoursystems
tosupplyourcustomerswithproductsthatmeetthelatest
demandsinatimelyfashion,bothbyreformingourbusi-
nessprocessesfromavalue-engineeringperspectiveandby
achievingdrasticcutsinmanufacturingleadtimes.Thislatter
initiativeisofparticularimportanceinourstepperbusiness.
Sincereductionofinventoryandrelatedassetsisoneofthe
mainkeystorestoringprofitabilityinthissegment,weplan
tointensifyeffortsinthisarea,too.Oncewehavetaken
theseactions,Iamconfidentthatwewillhavebuiltavalue
chainthatcanaddsubstantialvalueineverypartofNikon
operations,frommanufacturingtosalesandafter-sales
services.
ExpansionintoChina
Chinaisanimportantproductionbaseforusasweseekto
improvecost- competitiveness.Wehavenowestablisheda
majormanufacturingplantfordigitalcamerasinthecityof
Wuxi.Atthesametime,wealsorecognizethat,intermsof
scaleandgrowthpotential,Chinarepresentsanoutstanding
opportunityasamarketinitsownright.Weareestablishing
