Netsalesdeclined13.1%to¥41,875million,generatinganoperatinglossof¥1,260million.Despite
effortstodevelopnewmarkets,theCustomizedProductsBusinesssufferedasharpfallinsalesasthe
prolongedmarketdownturnimpacteddemandforopticalcomponentsforber-opticcommunications
applications.Salesofcustomizedequipmentalsodeclinedsignicantly.Salesofbinocularsandtelescopes
productsroseassalesofnewproducts,includingupdatedrangesofhigh-gradebinocularsHGseries
andloupessupplementedsolidsalesofexistingproducts.Demandforsurveyinginstrumentsfromthe
constructionandcivilengineeringsectorscooledamidreducedpublic-worksspendinginJapan,result-
inginlowersalesoftheseproducts.Salesofeyewearproductsalsodeclinedoverallamidpoormarket
conditions.Inophthalmiclenses,salesofhigh-added-valueitems,suchasprogressiveadditionlenses,in-
creased,whilesalesoflenseswithsinglevisionlensesalsoheldupwell.Thiswasoffset,however,byprice
erosionwithophthalmicframesandsunglasses,whichdraggeddowntotalsalesintheeyewearsector.

Thissegmentconsistsofanumberofdifferentbusinessunits.Currentlyweareundertakingvarious
structuralandotherreformstoboostprotability,withtheaimofensuringthateachbusinessunitcan
generatesteadyearningsgrowthandcontributetoimprovedconsolidatedprotabilityoverall.
Inthesurveyinginstrumentseld,theyearendedMarch2003markedtheconclusionofanagree -
menttoestablishaJapan-based50:50jointventurebetweenNikonandTrimbleNavigationLtd.,ofthe
UnitedStates,aleaderinsurveyinginstruments.BringingtogetherNikon’sadvancedopticaltechnology,
salesnetworkinJapanandthehigh-qualityreputationoftheNikonbrandwithTrimble’sbroadrangeof
GP S(GlobalPositioningSystem)andotherinstrumentsanditsglobalsalesnetwork,theestablishmentof
thisventure,calledNikon-TrimbleCo.,Ltd.,promisestogeneratesubstantialmutualbenetsbyenabling
bothcompaniestoexpandtheirpresenceinthesurveyinginstrumentseld.Thejointventurecommenced
operationsonJuly1,2003,intheprocessoftransformingtheNikonGroupsurveyinginstrumentdevelop -
ment,manufacturingandsalesoperationstoNikonGeotecsCo.,Ltd.
WemadefurtherprogressduringtheyearendedMarch2003inthedevelopmentofNikon’schemical
mechanicalpolishing(CMP )systembusinesswiththecreationinNovember2002ofaninternaldivisionto
overseebusinessdevelopmentinthisarea.Increasinglyadvancedsemiconductormanufacturingprocesses
designedtocopewithhigherlevelsoflarge -scaleintegration(L S I )inchipsandtheintroductionofnew
materialsaredrivingdemandformethodsofensuringthatthemultiplelayersofconductorsanddielectric
layerspackedontopofsiliconwafersareuniform.CMPsystemmeetsthisneedbyapplyingbothchemi-
calandphysicalprocessestothesurfacesoftheselayerstopolishthemandmakethemuniformlyeven.
AtNikon,weareapplyingourvarioustechnicalexpertiseinopticallenspolishingandopticalmeasure-
ment,aswellasotherstepper-derivedtechnology,todevelophigh-precisionCMPsystems.Business
developmenteffortsarenowatarelativelyadvancedstage.Weanticipatethatthisbusinesswillmakea
signicantcontributiontoearningsonceitbecomesestablished.
