Althoughthemarketfortraditionallmcamerascontinuedtoshrink,
furtherbriskexpansionofthedigitalcameramarketboostedsegment
performancesignicantly.Salesincreased22.7%year-on-yearto
¥271,956million.Gainsinsalesvolume,asignicantpresenceofhigh-
marginSLR-typedigitalcameraswithintheoverallsalesmix,combined
withavarietyofcost-reductionmeasures,resultedinalargegainin
segmentoperatingincome,whichclimbed72.0%to¥27,745million.
BusinessStrategy
Thedigitalcameramarketcontinuestoexpandrapidlyworldwide.This
stronggrowthhaspromptedtheentryofmanufacturersfromother
sectorsintothemarket.Competitionhasalsobecomeercerasthe
battlegroundhaswidenedfollowingtheintroductionofproductssuch
asmobilephonesequippedwithbuilt-inmegapixelcameras.
Nikon’sstrategywithdigitalcamerasistoplaytoitstechnical
strengthsincameratechnology,indigitalimageprocessingtechnology,
andinopticaltechnologiesthatcanboosttheperformanceofimage
sensors.Wearealsodeliberatelytargetingthosesegmentsofthemarket
thatarelargeinvolumeandthemostprotable.Wearethepioneersin
thesegmentforlens-interchangeableSL R-typedigitalcameras,andwe
dominatethisparticularsegment.DuringtheyearendedMarch2003,
inadditiontothecamerasfortheprofessionalmarketsegment,we
launchedtheD100,anSLR-typedigitalcameradesignedforprofession-
alsandamateurphotographyenthusiasts.Itwasreceivedextremelywell.
WeplantoextendthisrangeofcamerasfurthertodevelopSLR-type
digitalcamerasthatwillappealstronglytotheaverageconsumer.

Wehavenowdevelopedastrongpositionatthehigh-endconsumerdigitalcameramar-
ket.Ournextgoalistoextendthisfranchisetotargetmiddle-classandpopular-classmarkets,
whilecontinuingtopayextraattentiontobrandloyalists.COOLPI XistheNikonproduct
brandintheconsumer-marketsegment,andwecontinuetodevelopthisrange.Buildingon
ourhigh-qualitybrandimage,weplantodevelopproductsforawiderrangeofcustomers
includingyoungerconsumersthatcreateaddedvaluethroughvideoandaudiocapabilities
andenhancedcomputerconnectivityaswellasadvanceddesigns.
Thedigitalcameramarketisincreasinglymarkedbyintensetechnology-basedcompeti-
tion,byinexorablecompressionofdevelopmentcycles,andbyercecompetitiononprice.
Tosomeextent,theseproblemsareunavoidable.Ourresponseistospeedupallprocessesof
thebusinesscycle,fromproductdevelopmenttosales,sothatwecanalwaysensuretimely
productlaunches.Hence,oneofourmostimportantbusinessissuesishowtomaintainprot-
ability.Wecontinuetoworkhardtodrivedownunitcostsandreassesstheentirevaluechain
sothatwecanraiseprotabilityandlaunchthemostcompetitiveproducts.
Aspartofthisdrive,wehaveestablishedNikonImaging(China)Co.,Ltd.,amanufactur-
ingsubsidiarymainlyforconsumer-typedigitalcameras.BasedinWuxi,JiangsuProvince
inChina,productionofconsumerdigitalcamerasisscheduledtobegininthelatterhalfof
theyearendingMarch2004.Inaddition,wehaveestablishedalocalsalesbranchofNikon
Imaging(China)Co.,Ltd.inShanghaitoboostsalesintheChinesemarket.Elsewhere,we
haveinvestedinproductioncapacityatNikon(Thailand)Co.,Ltd.forlensunits,whicharekey
partsofdigitalcameras.Thesemovespromisetoboostourcost-andvalue-competitiveness
substantially.
Wearestrivingtoboostourshareofthemarketfortraditionallmcamerasevenasit
declinessothatwecancontinuetogeneratestableprotsfromthissector.Inthepopular
segmentofthismarketweweresuccessfulinachievingthisaimasaresultofthepopularityof
newmodelssuchastheNikonF75(orN75intheUnitedStatesandU2inJapan).
Newinitiativesinthepipelineincludedevelopmentprojectsintheareasofimage-related
software/hardwareandotherapplications.Wewillalsoconsiderpossibilitiestocollaborate
withotherrmstoachieveourobjectives.Inaddition,aspartofourbrandstrategy,through
anincreaseddialoguewithawiderangeofcustomers,wearetryingtogiveNikonproductsa
moreaccessibleandeasilyenjoyableimage,whichisideallysuitedtothedigitalcameraage.
Topics/Achievements
NikonImaging(China)Co.,Ltd.willinitiateproduc-
tionofconsumerdigitalcamerasinthelatterhalfof
thescalyearendingMarch2004,withfull-scale
productionscheduledfromthescalyearending
March2005onwards.Constructionworkiscurrently
underwaytoincreasetotalproductionoorarea.
Enhancedproductioncapacitywillfacilitategreater
in-housemanufacturingofsomecomponents.
