IntheyearendedMarch2003,withthecompletionofsystemstargetingwastereduc-
tions,Nikonachievedzero -emissionsoneyearaheadstatusatitsvemainmanufac-
turingsitesinJapan(Ohi,Yokohama,Sagamihara,KumagayaandMito)asaresultof
acceleratedeffortstopromotereductionandrecyclingofwaste.Nikondeneszero -
emissionsstatusasareductioninthetotalvolumeofwastesenttolandlltobelow1%
ofallemissions.Futureplanscallfortheachievementofzero-emissionsstatusbymajor
manufacturingsubsidiariesinJapanbytheendofMarch2006(SendaiNikonCorp.has
alreadyachievedzero-emissionsstatus).
Harmoniousenvironmentalco- existenceandarecycling-orientedper-
spectivehavealwaysbeencoreaspectsofNikon’sfundamentalbusiness
philosophy.Nikonformulateditsownbasicenvironmentalmanagement
policyin1992,afterwhichthecompanyinstitutedacomprehensivepro -
gramofenvironmentalconservationmeasures.Thisfocusedlargelyon
theconservationofenergyandresources.MostNikonGroupcompanies
haveobtainedISO14001certicationfortheirenvironmentalmanage -
mentsystems.Nikonalsoroutinelyappliesitsownquantitativeproduct
assessmentprocedurestodevelopmoreeco- consciousproducts.
Modernsocietylookstocorporationstoinstituteadvancedenviron-
mentalmanagementpracticessothatsustainabledevelopmentcanbe-
comeareality.Inresponse,effortsarebeingintensiedacrosstheNikon
Grouptoreducetheenvironmentalimpactofitsactivities.
Sortingandreductionofwastevolumehasbeenachieved
attheSendaiNikonRecyclingCenterthroughtheuseof
specialmachines.
DevelopmentofEco -Glass
Nikonhasbeenworkingonvariousimprovementstothe
compositionofopticalglasstogiveitamoreeco -conscious
prole.In1995,Nikonbeganfull-scaledevelopmentwork
onanewtypeofenvironmentally-soundopticalglass(eco -
glass)thatdoesnotcontaintoxicsubstancessuchasleadand
arsenic.Afternumerousdesignanddevelopmentstudiesto
examinewaysofretainingopticalperformancewhileeliminat-
ingsuchsubstances,Nikonbeganfull-scaleeffortsatdesign-
ingopticalproductsthatincorporatetheneweco -glassin
1998.Today,eco -glassisusedasmuchaspossiblethroughout
theNikonproductrange,fromstepperstocameras.Inthe
yearendedMarch2003,theproportionofnewopticaldesigns
incorporatingeco-glasstopped90%.Nikoncontinuestowork
toraisethisproportionfurtherandtoensuretominimizethe
possibilityofanyenvironmentalpollutionthroughoutthelife
cyclesoftheglass,frominitialmaterialtonaldisposalstages.

CreationofEnvironmentalActionPlanfor
theYearEndingMarch2004
Eachyear,Nikonrevisesanenvironmentalactionplanthatsetsoutspecic
numericalperformancetargetsforproductsandoperatingsiteenviron-
ments.Newtargetsandenvironmentalconservationactivityprioritiesareset
onceprogressstatushasbeendetermined.IntheyearendingMarch2004,
theprimefocusispartlydictatedbytheimplementationofnewEUdirec-
tivesprohibitingtheimportofproductsthatcontaincertainlevelsoftoxic
chemicalsubstancessuchashexavalentchromiumandlead.Nikonhasset
inplaceprogramstoswitchtolead-freesolderandtominimizetheuseof
leadinthemountingcircuitboard.Thetargetistoraisetheproportionof
lead-freeprintedcircuitboardsto100%forallconsumerproductsbythe
endofMarch2006,andtoover50%forallindustrialproductsbythesame
date.Otheraspectsofthelatestenvironmentalplanincludepreparations
toenhanceeliminatingothertoxicsubstancesfromproductsandtobolster
eco-friendly“greenprocurement”initiatives.
