valueofthefinancialinstrumentarerecognizedasacompo-
nentofAOCItooffsetaportionofthechangeinthetranslated
valueofthenetinvestmentbeinghedged,untiltheinvestment
isliquidated.Weformallydocumentallhedgingrelationships
forallderivativeandnonderivativehedgesandtheunderlying
hedgeditems,aswellasourriskmanagementobjectivesand
strategiesforundertakingthehedgetransactions.
Weclassifythefairvalueofourderivativecontractsand
thefairvalueofouroffsettinghedgedfirmcommitmentsas
eithercurrentorlong-term,whichareincludedinprepaidand
otherassetsandaccruedandotherliabilities,dependingon
whetherthematuritydateofthederivativecontractiswithin
orbeyondoneyearfromourbalancesheetdates.Thecash
flowsfromderivativestreatedashedgesareclassifiedinour
ConsolidatedStatementsofCashFlowsinthesamecategory
astheitembeinghedged.
Duringfiscal2006,2005and2004,allnetchangesinthe
fairvalueofbothourfairvaluehedgesandtheoffsetting
hedgedfirmcommitmentsandourcashflowhedgeswere
immaterial,aswereanyineffectiveportionsofthesehedges.
Nofairvaluehedgesorcashflowhedgeswerederecognized
ordiscontinuedinfiscal2006,2005or2004.Inaddition,the
amountofrealizednetlossesorgainsfromcashflowhedges
thatwerereclassifiedintoearningsduringfiscal2006,2005
and2004werenotsignificant.Theamountofestimatedcash
flowhedgesunrealizednetlosseswhichareexpectedto
bereclassifiedtoearningsinthenexttwelvemonthsisnot
significant.
Finally,ifanyshipyardwithwhichwehavecontractsto
buildourshipsisunabletoperform,wewouldberequired
toperformunderourforeigncurrencyswapsrelatedtothese
shipbuildingcontracts.Accordingly,baseduponthecircum-
stances,wemayhavetodiscontinuetheaccountingforthose
currencyswapsashedges,iftheshipyardcannotperform.
However,webelievethattheriskofshipyardnonperformance
isremote.
RevenueandExpenseRecognition
Guestcruisedepositsrepresentunearnedrevenuesand
areinitiallyrecordedascustomerdepositliabilitieswhen
received.Customerdepositsaresubsequentlyrecognizedas
cruiserevenues,togetherwithrevenuesfromonboardand
otheractivities,whichincludetransportationandshoreexcur-
sionrevenuesandallassociateddirectcostsofavoyage,upon
completionofvoyageswithdurationsoftennightsorless
andonaproratabasisforvoyagesinexcessoftennights.
Futuretraveldiscountvouchersissuedtoguestsaretypically
recordedasareductionofrevenueswhensuchvouchersare
utilized.Cancellationfeesarerecognizedinrevenuesatthe
timeofthecancellation.Revenuesandexpensesfromour
tourandtravelservicesarerecognizedatthetimetheservices
areperformedorexpensesareincurred.
Oursaletopassengersofairandothertransportationto
andfromourshipsandtherelatedcostofpurchasingthis
serviceisrecordedascruisepassengerticketrevenuesand
cruisetransportationcosts,respectively,intheaccompanying
ConsolidatedStatementsofOperations.Theproceedsthat
wecollectfromthesaleofthirdpartyshoreexcursionsand
onbehalfofonboardconcessionaires,netoftheamounts
remittedtothem,arerecordedasconcessionrevenues,on
anetbasis,inonboardandothercruiserevenues.
Insurance/Self-Insurance
Weuseacombinationofinsuranceandself-insurancefor
anumberofrisksincludingclaimsrelatedtocrewandpassen-
gers,hullandmachinery,warrisk,workers’compensation,
propertydamageandgeneralliability.Liabilitiesassociated
withcertainoftheserisks,includingcrewandpassengerclaims,
areestimatedbasedon,amongotherthings,historicalclaims
experience,severityfactorsandotheractuarialassumptions.
Ourexpectedlossaccrualsarebasedonestimates,andwhile
webelievetheamountsaccruedareadequatetheultimate
lossmaydifferfromtheamountsprovided.
SellingandAdministrativeExpenses
Sellingexpensesincludeitemssuchasadvertising,market-
ing,promotionalandrelatedcosts.Advertisingcostsare
chargedtoexpenseasincurredexceptforbrochuresand
mediaproductioncosts.Thebrochuresandmediaproduction
costsarerecordedasprepaidexpensesandchargedtoexpense
asconsumedoruponthefirstairingoftheadvertisement,
respectively.Advertisingexpensestotaled$464million,$455
millionand$464millioninfiscal2006,2005and2004,respec-
tively.AtNovember30,2006and2005,theamountofadver-
tisingcostsincludedinprepaidexpenseswasnotsignificant.
Administrativeexpensesrepresentthecostsofourshoreside
shipsupport,reservationandotheradministrativefunctions
andincludeitemssuchassalariesandrelatedbenefits,
professionalfeesandoccupancycosts,whicharetypically
expensedasincurred.
