naturalgasisexpectedtodrivestrongdrill-

maturingNorthSeafields,ourcustomers
willneedmoreofourtechnologytomain-
tainproduction.
Weneedadiverseworkforce.We
operateinover90countries,andagrow-
ingmajorityofourrevenuecomesfrom
outsidetheU.S.Weneedtounderstand,
respectandoperateinmanydifferentcul-
tures.Soweareenhancingoureffortsto
recruit,trainanddeveloppeoplefrom
thosecultures.
Thereisnobettertrainingground
thanBakerHughes.Wehavesevendif-
ferentdivisionsoperatingaroundthe
world.Thisisagreatplaceforyoungengi-
neersandotherprofessionalstolearna
fullrangeoftechnologiesfromindustry
experts,andtoliveandworkinavariety
ofcultures.
Technologyinnovationisanother
criticalsuccessfactorforBakerHughes.
In2004,BakerHughesinvestedover
$270millioninresearchandengineering,
primarilytosupportexistingbusinesses.
Inmyview,wealsoneedalonger-term
approachtotechnologydevelopment.To
thisend,wearebuildingonasmallgroup
ofexpertsatthecorporateleveltodevelop
broader,multi-divisionsolutionstomajor
problemsthatourcustomersface–like
productionoptimization,deepwaterdevel-
opment,andhighpressure/hightempera-
turewells.
Strongproductlinedivisionsgive
BakerHughesacompetitiveadvan-
tage.BakerHugheswillcontinuetodiffer-
entiateitselfwithstrongdivisions,highly
focusedontheirproductlines.Witha
strongfocus,wecanmaintainhighlevels
ofqualitywithoutblurringtheresponsibil-
ityforexcellenceintechnologyandservice.
Wewillmaintainourcapital
discipline.Thecompanyhasworkedhard
todevelopcapitaldiscipline,byreducing
debtandcarefullyevaluatinginvestments.
WeuseacompanymetriccalledBaker
ValueAdded(BVA)thatmeasuresour
operatingprofitaftertaxlessthecostof
capitalemployed.TheBVAconcepthas
givenourmanagersaperformanceyard-
stickthathashelpedthemimprove
returns.Wewillmaintaincapitaldiscipline
whilepursuingopportunitiesforgrowth.
