Wehavesevenoperatingdivisions–BakerAtlas,Baker
HughesDrillingFluids,BakerOilTools,BakerPetrolite,Centri-
lift,HughesChristensenandINTEQ–thatwehaveaggregated
intotheOilfieldsegmentbecausetheyhavesimilareconomic
characteristicsandbecausethelong-termfinancialperfor-
manceofthesedivisionsisaffectedbysimilareconomiccondi-
tions.Theseoperatingdivisionsmanufactureandsellproducts
andprovideservicesusedintheoilandnaturalgasindustry,
includingdrilling,formationevaluation,completionandpro-
ductionofoilandnaturalgaswells.Theyoperateinthesame
markets,whichincludeallofthemajoroilandnaturalgas
producingregionsoftheworld:NorthAmerica,SouthAmer-
ica,Europe,Africa,theMiddleEastandtheFarEast.TheOil-
fieldsegmentalsoincludesour30%interestinWesternGeco,
aseismicventureweenteredintowithSchlumbergerLimited

BakerAtlasisaleadingproviderofformationevaluation
andwirelinecompletionandproductionservicesforoiland
naturalgaswells.
FormationEvaluation.Formationevaluationinvolves
measuringandanalyzingspecificphysicalpropertiesofthe
rock(petrophysicalproperties)intheimmediatevicinityofa
wellboretodetermineanoilornaturalgasreservoir’sbound-
aries,volumeofhydrocarbonsandabilitytoproducefluidsto
thesurface.Electronicsensorinstrumentationisrunthrough
thewellboretomeasureporosityanddensity(howmuchopen
spacethereisintherock),permeability(howwellconnected
thespacesintherockare)andresistivity(isthereoil,natural
gasorwaterinthespaces).Atthesurface,measurementsare
recordeddigitallyandcanbedisplayedonacontinuousgraph,
or“welllog,”whichshowshoweachparametervariesalong
thelengthofthewellbore.Formationevaluationtoolscanalso
beusedtorecordformationpressuresandtakesamplesof
formationfluidstobefurtherevaluatedonthesurface.
Formationevaluationinstrumentationcanberuninthe
wellinseveralwaysandatdifferenttimesoverthelifeofthe
well.Thetwomostcommonmethodsofdatacollectionare
wirelinelogging(performedbyBakerAtlas)andlogging-while-
drilling(“LWD”)(performedbyINTEQ).Wirelineloggingiscon-
ductedbypullingorpushinginstrumentsthroughthewellbore
afteritisdrilled,whileLWDinstrumentsareattachedtothe
drillstringandtakemeasurementswhilethewellisbeing
drilled.Wirelineloggingmeasurementscanbemadebeforethe
well’sprotectivesteelcasingisset(openholelogging)orafter
casinghasbeenset(casedholelogging).BakerAtlasalsooffers
geophysicaldatainterpretationserviceswhichhelptheopera-
torinterpretthepetrophysicalpropertiesmeasuredbythelog-
ginginstrumentsandmakeinferencesabouttheformation,
