Still,thispastyearmanyofourcorecustomers
grappledwithunfavorablebusinessconditionsand
marketuncertainty.Designagencies,publishing
houses,andothercreativeorganizationsfacedsmaller
clientbudgetsandreducedstafng,leadingthemto
decreasetheirspendingoncapitalexpendituressuch
asnewsoftware.Asaresultofthisreduceddemand,
aswellasanoverallweakenedglobaleconomy,our
dilutedearningspershareforscalyear2002
decreasedby5%yearoveryearfrom$0.83to$0.79,
andouroperatingprotdecreasedby24%yearover
year.Inthisdifculteconomicclimate,weconcen-
tratedonreinforcingourstrongmarketpositions
andpreparingourselvesforthefuturewithincreased
researchanddevelopment.
Theresultsofoureffortswillallowustotakeadvan-
tageofseveralculminatingmarkettrends.Cost-con-
sciousenterprisesarelookingtondgreaterreturn
ontheirexistingtechnologyinvestments,creative
professionalsarelookingforwaystosavemoneyand
improveefciency,andhomeandofceusersneed
easy-to-usesoftwaretohelpthemworkwithanew
generationofdigitalcamerasandvideocameras.

Forscalyear2002,wearereportingearningsof
$191.4million.Thisrepresentsa7%decreasecom-
paredwithscalyear2001.Wemadechangestoour
reportingstructure,movingsomeofourproducts
intonewcategoriesthatmoreaccuratelyreecttheir
usagebyourcustomers.Adobe’sCreativeProfessional
revenuewas$351.3million,an11%decreaseover
scalyear2001.DigitalImagingandVideorevenue
was$411.9million,a6%decrease.SalesofAdobe
Acrobatsoftwareandrelatedproductspushed
AdobeePaper®solutionsapplicationrevenuefrom
$291.9millionto$312.5million,anincreaseof
7%overscalyear2001.RevenuefromourOEM
PostScriptandOthersegmentdeclinedfrom
$104.8millionto$89.0million,adecreaseof15%.
Duringscalyear2002,grossmarginswere91.0%,
comparedto93.4%inscal2001.Asapercentage
ofrevenue,researchanddevelopmentexpenseswere
21.1%,comparedto18.2%in2001—areection
ofAdobe’scommitmenttocontinuetoinvestinits
future.Salesandmarketingexpensesandgeneral
andadministrativeexpenses,asapercentofrevenue,
were32.7%and9.3%respectively—essentiallyat
thesamelevelsin2002whencomparedto2001.
Thankstoourongoingnancialdiscipline,weonce
againendtheyearinasolidnancialposition,with
$617.7millionincashandcashequivalents.
