The Group reduced its interest in the Globalstar partnership, which is developing a worldwide digital
telecommunications service based on a constellation of low earth orbit satellites, from 6.1% to 5.2%,
generating a profit of £11.3m. To date, eight of the constellation of forty eight satellites (plus eight in-
orbit reserve satellites) have been successfully launched and full commercial service is planned for the
middle of 1999. Handsets will access both satellite and terrestrial networks and will automatically switch
to the satellite based service when outside terrestrial coverage.
