So whats new about a department store?
Well, at Federated t he answer is quit e a lot . We’ve embarked on an evolving
process ofreinvent ing our depart ment st ores, making t hem more convenient ,
exciting and at t uned t o t he needs and lifestyles of a 21st Cent ury cust omer.
We’re t est ing scores of new merchandising t echniques, philosophies and
concept s w ithin our exist ing st ores t o gauge consumer response, improve service
and challenge convent ional w isdom. It ’s a big undert aking t hat started wit h
innovat ions in junior’s depart ments, and has since expanded t o encompass
shoes, food services, cosmet ics even st rat egically placed comput erized e- osks
t hat offer unique and specialized it ems for
home delivery.
We’re also t inkering wit h
st ore format s. A new
M acy’s opened in f all
2000 in West Palm Beach,
FL with only 100,000
square f eet about 40
percent t he size of a t ypical
mall store. Locat ed on a
city st reet corner in
City Place, an eclectic new
mixed- use development ,
t his new M acy’s features
depart ment s t hat have been
dist illed t o t rendy and
t ightly edit ed assort ment s.
It is an example of a compact
new st ore capable of being
slot t ed int o smaller malls and
even st rip cent ers in market s
where larger- format st ores are
not practical.
