to centrally manage and control confidential information. And, they’re grappling with an explosion
of Macs, netbooks, smartphones and other new devices, driven by a younger workforce accustomed
to working on the go.
This unprecedented combination of market forces creates the perfect opportunity for desktop
virtualization—one of the few breakthrough technologies that holds as much promise for end users
as it does for IT. CIOs love desktop virtualization because it allows them to manage and control
everything centrally, giving them security, and dramatically simplifying desktop management. And
employees love virtual desktops because they get the ultimate freedom to work from any device they
choose, from any location they want.
We’re already serving more than 100 million of these desktops today with XenApp, our market-
leading solution for delivering on-demand apps to both physical and virtual desktops. The release
of XenDesktop 4 late last year, technologically catapulted us further ahead, establishing Citrix as a
leader in the broader desktop virtualization market. This new release is nothing short of revolutionary.
This year, we’ll raise the bar again when we deliver XenClient—a new client-side virtualization
technology for laptops that gives mobile workers all the benefits of desktop virtualization, even
when they’re disconnected.
A leading industry analyst recently predicted that this unique combination of benefits would result
in 60 percent of all enterprise desktops using some form of virtualization by the end of 2012. With
600 million Windows desktops in corporate use today, the opportunity in front of us couldn’t be clearer.
Virtual apps, virtual desktops and virtual clients. This is our formula for radically changing the
economics of desktop computing, enabling IT to turn every enterprise desktop and app into an
on-demand service.
Expanding the reach of virtual meetings
While the worldwide recession may have slowed the growth of our on-premise software products
in 2009, it actually helped accelerate our software-as-a-service business. Tight travel budgets fueled
the need for virtual meetings and work-from-home solutions. The web is the perfect platform for
this, demonstrated by solid growth across our GoToMeeting, GoToWebinar, GoToMyPC, and
GoToAssist product lines. Our Online Services business reflected this dynamic, delivering $308
million in revenue and 19 percent growth for the year.
This strong growth in our online virtualization business allowed us to serve a record number
of customers last year. More than 100 million people experienced a SaaS-based virtual meeting
or support session powered by Citrix in 2009. And we hosted over 80 million remote access
connections with our market-leading GoToMyPC solution for PCs and Macs. As a result, Citrix
now holds a solid position as one of the top five SaaS vendors in the world.
